Herion and Kirkham lead in judicial races
Chris Herion and James Kirkham led in the races for the two open Kittitas County Superior Court Judge positions in unofficial results as of Tuesday night.
In the race for Kittitas Superior Court Judge Position 1, Herion has 6,287 votes, 53%, and Matt Mills has 5,632 votes, 47%.
In the race for Kittitas Superior Court Judge Position 2, Kirkham has 6,317 votes, 52%, and Patricia Todd has 5,809 votes, 48%.
County voters are rejecting Kittitas County Road Maintenance Levy Proposition No. 1 by a vote of 5,596 no, 71%, to 2,335 yes, 29%.
In the race for 8th Congressional District Representative Democrat Kim Schrier has 145,169 votes, 55%, and Republican Carmen Goers has 118,848 votes, 45%.
Republican Cory Wright ran unopposed for Kittitas County Commissioner 1, and Republican Laura Osiadacz ran unopposed for Kittitas County Commissioner 2. Both 13th District Representatives Republican Tom Dent and Republican Alex Ybarra ran unopposed.
The next vote count will be on Thursday and the election will be certified on Nov. 26.
City approves lease for Cold Weather Shelter
The City Council approved a lease arrangement with Kittitas County and HopeSource for the Cold Weather Shelter at the Western Village for November through March. HopeSource operates the shelter. The city is paying $74,400 for the site lease plus fees for additional needed services or labor. The council unanimously approved the lease but raised objections that receiving the document after the official start of the lease did not allow for any concerns to be addressed.
City Council hears budget report
City officials project only a slight increase in revenues for the 2025/2026 biennial budget leading to some budget adjustments. In addition to changes in personnel, the city will reduce hours at the Kittitas Valley Memorial Pool by closing on Sundays. The council heard a presentation on the budget at Monday’s meeting and will further discuss it up to its approval at the first meeting in December.
Court system outage impacts county courts
Kittitas County officials reported Monday that the state Administrative Office of the Courts recently identified unauthorized activity on the Washington Courts network. Immediate action has been taken to isolate the systems and work is underway to safely restore service. This heavily impacts majority of the systems that the Clerk's Office use to function. This includes publishing calendars, electronic filing, publishing new case filings and publishing judgments. All systems and functions will be up when it is safe to do so.
Marine Corps birthday celebrated
CWU’s Veterans Center celebrates the Marine Corps' birthday today with cupcakes available from noon to 4 p.m. at Bouillon Hall Room 214. Later on Wednesday, CWU’s Late Night Leadership Series features Army veteran and CWU alum David Puente Jr. talking about his journey from military service to his role as director of the state Department of Veteran Affairs. The presentation is at 5:30 p.m. in the SURC Ballroom.
Lecture explores Cuban art history.
The CWU Department of Art + Design hosts a lecture by art historian Asiel Sepúlveda from 4 to 5 p.m., Thursday, The talk will be screened for viewers in Randall Hall Room 117, and will also be available online via Zoom. Titled The Plantation’s Smokescreens: Art and Vision in Nineteenth Century Cuba, the talk will explore how lithographic artists crafted new ways of seeing the Cuban landscape during the nineteenth century.
Pint Night supports the Veterans Center
Iron Horse Brewery features a Pint Night to support the CWU Veterans Center from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday. For every pint sold, $1 will be donated to the CWU Veterans Foundation Fund. Music will be provided by 88.1 The Burg.

EHS volleyball hosts a playoff game
The Ellensburg High School volleyball team hosts Selah at 6 p.m., Wednesday in the district championship match with a berth in the 2A state tournament at stake.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is beef stroganoff, mixed vegetables and a banana. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
