Roslyn teen attacked by a bear
A 17-year-old Roslyn girl was swiped at by a bear while taking out the trash on Tuesday, according to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. The girl was heading to a Dumpster when the bear struck her arm, tearing her clothing and scratching her skin. The injuries were minor and the girl did not seek medical attention. Wildlife officials found bear scat and hair around the Dumpster. The bear was found and killed by Wildlife officers. Roslyn residents are cautioned not to feed the bears and to dispose of garbage properly.
EPD names officer of the year
Detective Ryan Shull was named the Ellensburg Police Department Officer of the Year for 2023. Shull has served for 12 years as a detective in the department. The Chiefs Award was given to Dan Hansberry, who retired as a Captain this past February. The awards were given out at the National Night Out event on Aug. 6.
Kruisin’ Kittitas is on Saturday
The Kruisin’ Kittitas Car Show and Burnouts is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday in downtown Kittitas. The event features a classic car show, monster Jeep ridges, food vendors, music, a performance by the Seattle Cossacks at 2:30 p.m. and the burnouts at 3 p.m.
“Rango” is the Friday movie in the park
“Rango,” will be shown at Veteran’s Memorial Park at about 9 p.m., Friday. The movie, presented by Ellensburg Parks and Recreation, is free. People are encouraged to bring chairs and snacks. This is the final movie in the city’s summer series.
Alley closure on Friday
The alley between Okanogan Street/Columbia Street and 12th Avenue/13th Avenue will be closed today to trench and place an underground electrical service.
Junior Rodeo Parade and breakfast on Saturday
The Junior Rodeo Parade is on Saturday in downtown Ellensburg. The lineup starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Skate Park. This year’s theme is Stars, Stripes and Summer Nights. Participants can ride a bike, scooter or horse, walk or pull a wagon. Before the parade, the Rodeo Kickoff Breakfast, sponsored by the Ellensburg Noon Rotary will be served starting at 7 a.m. on North Pearl Street. There will be live music and a pancake-eating contest. The suggested donation is $10 for ages 13 and up.
Pearl Street to be closed
Pearl Street will be closed from Third to Fifth avenues from 5:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., Saturday, to allow for the Rodeo/Fair Kickoff Breakfast and Junior Rodeo Parade.
National Nonprofit Day is celebrated
National Nonprofit Day will be celebrated by Upper County nonprofit organizations with Fun in the Sun from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cle Elum City Park. The event features 15 local organizations, a free lunch, live music and family-friendly activities.
Roslyn Yard summer movie series starts
The Roslyn Yard Summer Nights Movie Series features “Boys in the Boat,” at sunset on Saturday. The free outdoor film series continues through Sept. 28 and is sponsored by Basecamp Books and Bites and the Roslyn Downtown Association.
Poetry event at Palace Gallery
Inland Poetry presents Triple No. 23, poets from the Ravenna Press Triple Series from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, at the Palace Gallery. There will be readings, a panel discussion Q&A and book signings.
City Council meets Monday
The Ellensburg City Council meets at 7 p.m., Monday, in the Council Chambers. Presentation of the 2023 Police Report and the 2023 Crime Report are on the agenda.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is orange fennel pork salad, a roll and peaches. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 83 degrees. Sunset is at 8:11 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 52 degrees. Winds will be 10 to 25 mph. The weekend forecast calls for highs of 92 on Saturday and 85 on Sunday.
