Cool off on Friday
With the temperature forecast to top 100 degrees, Hal Holmes Community Center will act as a cooling center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the lobby open to 7 p.m.
Pickerel to play the Ink
Mark Pickerel will perform on the Ellensburg Community Radio Tiny Stage in the Ink Building on Main Street from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, as part of First Friday in downtown Ellensburg. The evening serves as a kickoff for ECR’s FM Tower Fundraiser. ECR has received approval to broadcast on the FM dial at 98.3 and is raising money for the tower and required equipment.
Unity Park artist deadline nears
Today is the deadline for artists to submit a request for qualifications to create public art for Unity Park. The request for qualifications must include a letter of interest, resume and portfolio. The artist and proposed project will be selected on Sept. 25. Information is available on the city’s website.
Make Music ribbon cutting Friday
The ribbon cutting for the new Make Music Ellensburg location at 201 N. Pearl St. is from 4 to 5 p.m., Friday. The event features student performances, and a chance to meet the teachers and sign up for fall classes and lessons.
“Coco” is the Friday movie in park
“Coco,” will be shown at Veteran’s Memorial Park at about 9 p.m., tonight. The movie, presented by Ellensburg Parks and Recreation, is free. People are encouraged to bring chairs and snacks. Movies are shown every Friday through Aug. 16.
Youth Gladiator Dash is on Saturday
The Youth Gladiator Dash for kids aged 5 through 8th grade is Saturday at Rotary Park. Check-in is at 9:30 a.m. with races starting at 10 a.m. The Dash includes running, jumping, sliding, crawling, balancing, hopping, searching, climbing, throwing, and the opportunity to get muddy. Registration information is on the city’s website.
Bocce ball tourney on Saturday
The UKC Bocce Ball Tournament is on Saturday at South Cle Elum Fireman’s Park. Check-in is at 9 a.m. There will be prizes for the winning teams and kids’ games. Spectators are welcome. The tournament is sponsored by the Roslyn, Ronald, Cle Elum Heritage Club in conjunction with the Cle Elum Lodge.
City Council meets Monday
The Ellensburg City Council meets at 7 p.m., Monday, at the Council Chambers. Approval of an award letter and conditions for the First Avenue and Pine Street affordable housing project is on the agenda.
Ballots are due
Primary election ballots must be returned by 8 p.m., Tuesday. As of Wednesday afternoon, 12.8 percent of the ballots had been returned.
Eat with the police next week
Ellensburg and Cle Elum-Roslyn Police Departments celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday. The EPD hosts the Eat with the Heat BBQ serving hot dogs and hamburgers from 6 to 8 p.m. at Memorial Park. Several other law enforcement agencies will take part. The Cle Elum-Roslyn Police Department hosts National Night Out in Cle Elum with food, games and information from 5 to 7 p.m. at City Park.

Junior Rodeo on Saturday
The annual Ellensburg Rodeo Posse Junior Rodeo starts at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Ellensburg Rodeo Area. The event includes calf riding, steer riding, barrels race, pole bending, California stake race, flag race, goat tail tying, goat tying and mutton busting.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is a green chili cheeseburger, roasted potatoes and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
