Mountain High Sports changes hands, name

Long-time downtown Ellensburg business Mountain High Sports has been sold and will change its name to Performance Footwear and Outdoor Gear. Tami Walton opened Mountain High in 1989 after graduating from Central Washington University. She is selling the business to Ryan Backlund and Troy Rucker. Backlund grew up in Ellensburg. Backlund and Rucker also own Performance Footwear and Outdoor Gear in Wenatchee.


SPORTS

Central athletes earn academic honors

Central Washington University had 99 student-athletes receive the Division II Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement Award during the 2022-23 season, the association announced Thursday. CWU’s 99 recipients lead the Great Northwest Athletic Conference for the fourth-straight year. A student-athlete must maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher to be considered for the award.


EVENTS

Thorp dedicates Word War II memorial

The Thorp School District is holding a dedication to its World War II memorial at 11 a.m., Friday. A collection of military memorabilia donated to the school will be on display in the library.


Shelter celebrates anniversary

The Ellensburg Animal Shelter celebrates its one-year anniversary of joining the Yakima Humane Society from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at the shelter. There will be an adoption event, bounce house, a food truck, games and prizes.


Do the walk

First Friday Art Walk starts at 5 p.m., Friday in downtown Ellensburg. There will be music at various venues.


A day for young gladiators

Ellensburg’s annual Youth Gladiator Dash is Saturday at Rotary Park. Check-in is at 9:30 a.m. with action getting underway at 10 a.m. The dash features running, jumping, sliding, crawling, balancing, hoping, searching, climbing, throwing and getting muddy.

Learn about the sounds of the shrub-steppe

Saturday’s Kid’s Corral event at the Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility is “Do You Hear What I Hear? Sounds of the Shrub Steppe.” Kids will learn how to use a decibel meter to measure sounds and then record and draw what they hear. The session starts are 1 p.m. with a guided tour of a wind turbine at 2 p.m. The Kids’ Corral is a free series of events throughout the summer at the wind farm.


PUNCH Projects opens August exhibit

Punch Projects opens its August exhibition, “Juicy Tokul” by the Seattle-based multimedia art group, SOIL, at noon, Saturday. The opening will feature musical performances by Obo Martin and the Wavesons.


Cle Elum hosts car show

Mike’s Tavern is hosting a family-friendly car show from 4 to 8 p.m., Saturday in Cle Elum.


Summer concert series continues at Pass

Shook and Doria perform at 4 p.m., Saturday at the Summit West Plaza at Snoqualmie Pass as part of the Music in the Mountains concert series. In addition to the music, there is cornhole, beverages, barbecue sandwiches and ice cream available.


Time to piece together a team

Registration is open for the Ellensburg Public Library’s Jigsaw Puzzle Competition at 5:30 p.m., Aug. 16 in Hal Holmes Community Center. There are only 10 spots available for two-member teams. Registration must be done in person at the library’s reference desk.

LUNCH

The FISH Open Table lunch is Philly cheesesteak, mixed vegetables and peaches. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 91 degrees. Sunset is at 8:30 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 60 degrees. Winds will be from the northwest at 10 to 20 mph. Over the weekend the high is forecasted at 91 on Saturday and 86 on Sunday. There is a chance of isolated thunderstorms on Sunday.
