Poets advance
Henrik Barlow is the winner of this year’s Ellensburg High School Poetry Out Loud competition. Jayce Forrester finished as runner-up. Both students will compete in the regional Poetry Out Loud competition at 1 p.m., Feb. 3, at Kendall Hall on the Yakima Valley Community College campus.
KEEN Winter Fair is on Saturday
The annual KEEN Winter Fair is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday at Hal Holmes Community Center. The event features 30 different entities coming together to provide a free, family-friendly way to connect with environmental, educational and sustainable opportunities in the community.
Free ice cream!
The Upper Kittitas Senior Center is hosting a free ice cream social from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., today at the Centennial Center. People will be able to create sundaes with a variety of toppings.
ROTC exercise slated for Irene Rinehart
CWU’S ROTC will be conducting a tactical exercise, carrying backpacks and simulated rifles, at Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Signs will be posted at the park and there will be a person stationed at the Umptanum gate and I-90 underpass bridge area.
Celebrate Mozart’s birthday
Mozart’s 268th birthday will be celebrated with a concert of Mozart compositions for the French horn at 3 p.m., Saturday, at the McIntyre Music Building. The free concert is a fundraiser for the CWU Horn Club.
Give triathlon a try
Kittitas Valley Memorial Pool is giving people the chance to participate in an Indoor Ironman Triathlon starting Feb. 5 through March 5. The triathlon consists of 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of bike/elliptical and 26.2 miles run/walk. Not all events are required to be done in the traditional sequence or completed at the pool facility. The cost is $50 and includes admission to the pool for a month and a T-shirt upon completion.
Get into the swing
The Ellensburg Big Band continues its Swing Dance Project at 7 p.m., Monday, at Hal Holmes Community Center. The Big Band will offer a series of free with the first two on Monday and Jan. 29. The project is funded through an Ellensburg Arts Commission grant with additional support from the Ellensburg Public Library. The evening starts with lessons for beginners.
Lions Rock features local poet
CWU professor and poet Katharine Whitcomb will be the first speaker in the Lions Rock Visiting Writers Series on Wednesday at the Brooks Library Students Commons. Whitcomb will present a craft talk titled, “Let Your Writing Find its Form,” at noon, followed by a reading of her new poetry collection, “Habitats” at 6 p.m.

In high school basketball this weekend, Ellensburg travels to Ephrata tonight with the girls’ game at 5:30 and boys at 7, and hosts East Valley on Saturday with the girls at 3:30 p.m. and the boys at 5 p.m. Cle Elu-Roslyn hosts Goldendale tonight and travels to Granger on Saturday. On both days the girls play at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m. Kittitas travels to White Swan tonight and hosts Mabton on Saturday. On both days the girls play at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is a cheeseburger, roaster garlic potatoes and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
