Roads closed ahead
A few detours may be in the future for Ellensburg drivers. Sprague Street is closed today between Fifth and Sixth avenues for road repair work. The alley behind the 420 N. Pearl St. building is closed today to install new gas service. On Monday the city’s annual chipseal program begins with work being done on Water Street from Manitoba to Bender.
Check out the outdoors
The Ellensburg Public Library now offers Check Out Washington Packs, which include field guides, binoculars and a Discover Pass for library loan. The Washington State Parks Foundation secured sponsorship from the Washington State Employees Credit Union to fund the program.

Learning how to grow
The Washington Outdoor School is holding a free mini-garden camp for children from 10 a.m. to noon today at 7620 Manastash Road. The kids will sing songs, explore the gardens and orchard and make garden-inspired crafts. Parents and caregivers are required to stay.
Final weekend for ‘9 to 5’
Valley Musical Theatre’s production of “9 to 5” enters its final weekend of performances with shows tonight and Saturday at the Morgan Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $18 for students.
Gladiators need T-shirts
Today is the last day to register for the Youth Gladiator Dash and receive a T-shirt. The dash is on Aug. 5. Registration information is on the city of Ellensburg’s website.
Learn about lava
Kids can learn about lava flow at Saturday’s Kids Coral event at the Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility off Vantage Highway. Kids will be able to follow the ancient lava flows at Wild Horse and pick out a piece of basalt to paint. The Kids Coral session starts at 1 p.m., followed by a wind turbine guided tour at 2 p.m. The event is free but reservations are required, email wildhorse@pse.com.
Enjoy a Celtic afternoon
The Punch Project Stage hosts a Celtic Jamboree of Celtic, traditional Irish and bluegrass music from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday.
Poetry takes center stage
Old Skool’s presents the Headline Children Poetry Event at 7 p.m., Saturday. An open mic will follow poetry readings by acclaimed poets. It's an all-ages event with entry by donation.
Celebrating 100 years of rodeo
This month’s Rodeo Night at the Museum event features Rodeo Royalty: Queens and Ambassadors, at 7:23 p.m., Sunday at the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame. The series, which celebrates 100 years of the Ellensburg Rodeo, concludes in August.

The FISH Open Table lunch is a croissant Benedict with tomato, sausage, spinach, scrambled eggs and hollandaise sauce served on a croissant, along with potatoes and peppers and fruit salad. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
