Vehicle access to Irene Rinehart closed

Following a fire at Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park on Wednesday, vehicle access to the park will be closed until further notice. Strong winds made fighting the fire difficult. The blaze spread to 1 ½ acres before it was contained. The cause is under investigation.


Last week of school in Kittitas County

This is the final week of the school year in Kittitas County. The last day in Ellensburg, Easton and Thorp school districts is today. Due to a school closure for frozen water lines in January, the Kittitas school year ends on Monday. Cle Elum-Roslyn schools ended on Wednesday.


Car show on Saturday

The Central Valley Rodders Ellensburg Open Car Show is Saturday on Third Avenue and Pine Street starting at 9 a.m. The show includes a fun run from at 6 p.m. on Alder and University Way. This year’s show is in memory of Bruce Harris.


Affordable housing on city council agenda

The City Council will consider declaring city property on First Avenue and Pine Street surplus for an affordable housing project at its 7 p.m. meeting Monday in Council chambers. The city received two proposals for the property. The Affordable Housing Committee recommended awarding the project to Inversion Design Build to construct a 36-unit building with 12 studio apartments and 24 one-bedroom. HopeSource submitted the other proposal.


The summer reading program starts

With the school year ending, the Ellensburg Public Library’s Summer Reading Program starts. The kickoff party for the youth summer reading program is from 4:30 to 6 p.m., Tuesday in the library and on the library lawn. There will be special events on Wednesdays throughout the summer.


Touch a Truck on Tuesday

The annual Touch a Truck is from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Tuesday at Rotary Park. Children can touch and climb on various vehicles and equipment in a safe environment. A bike rodeo will be held at the mountain bike skills area of the park at the same time.


Juneteenth celebration on Wednesday

A Juneteenth celebration will be held in Ellensburg starting at 4 p.m., Wednesday. The Kittitas County Museum offers dedicated programming showcasing the history and culture of African Americans in Kittitas County. Flyers and maps highlighting sites of significance to the Black community will be available. A program featuring local dignitaries, community leaders and music by Black Grenade Entertainment starts at 4 p.m., at the Red Pickle. The evening concludes with the first Ellensburg Night Market of the season with vendors and live music on Pine Street.


Headliner added to Gustfest

The Bonafide Band featuring Nirvana’s bassist Krist Novoselic and Ellensburg’s Mark Pickerel, will perform at the Gustfest concert on June 23 in Umtanum Hall at the Kittitas County Event Center. The Gustfest concert is part of the Ellensburg Music Preservation Project to preserve the history of music in Ellensburg. Multiple bands from throughout Ellensburg’s musical history will perform at Gustfest, which will run from 1 to 6 p.m. The concert is free and open to all ages. There will be food trucks.


LUNCH                                                        

The FISH Open Table Lunch is chef salad, a roll and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.


WEATHER                                                                              

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 70 degrees. Sunset is at 8:58 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 48 degrees. Winds will be 20 to 30 mph.  The weekend forecast calls for highs of 62 on Saturday and 65 on Sunday.
