NEWS

State of University address is this morning.

CWU President Jim Wohlpart delivers the annual State of the University address at 9 a.m., today, in the SURC Ballroom. Following the speech, a series of breakout sessions on campus will share updates on university-wide initiatives.


Thorp Community Days this weekend

Thorp Community Days kick off with a dinner and auction, at 6 p.m., tonight, in the Thorp School main gym. The Thorp FFA caters the dinner and music will be by Riley Schmit. Advance tickets are $25 or $30 at the door. Community Days continue Saturday with activities starting with a breakfast at 8 a.m. at the Thorp Fire Station. The grand parade is at 9:30 a.m. and the festival is at 10 a.m. at the fire station.


Mural ribbon cutting on Friday

As part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the First Friday Art Walk, there will be a ribbon cutting for the new Creative District sign/mural to the left of Nuwave Gallery/Fortuity Cellars on Third Avenue at 4 p.m., today.


First Friday activities include The Sleepers performing on the ECR Tiny Stage in the Ink Building from 5 to 7 p.m.


Central professor honored

Central Washington University mathematics professor Jean Marie Linhart received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Pacific Northwest Section of the Mathematical Association of America. In its award citation, the organization noted Linhart’s efforts to make her courses accessible to students from all walks of life.


Unity Park's grand opening is Saturday

The grand opening ceremony for Unity Park at Fourth Avenue and Pearl Street in downtown Ellensburg is Saturday. Music starts at 12:30 p.m. with the ceremony kicking off at 1 p.m. Performances include The Sleepers, Yakama Nation’s Little Swans Dancers, Killdeer String Band, Shakespeare In The Park, Mexican Folclorico Dance, Ellensburg Dance Ensemble, and Star Anna.


Windall Cider Fest is Saturday

The annual WindFall Cider Fest is 7 to 10 p.m., Saturday at the Kittitas Valley Event Center. The fest features at least 12 cider houses from the Puget Sound area, Wenatchee, Yakima, and beyond, and live music by Ellensburg Blusers and Rusty Cage. The event is a fundraiser for the Kittitas Environmental Education Network’s Yakima Canyon Interpretive Center. This is a 21-plus event and tickets are $45 with five scrips and $20 for music only.


SPORTS

High school football is slated for tonight

In high school football tonight, Ellensburg hosts Grandview. The Bulldogs have held opponents to nine points or fewer the past three games, but are still looking for their first win of the season. Kittitas takes a 2-2 record into its home game with White Swan. Cle Elum-Roslyn looks to improve to 4-1 at home against Highland. All games kickoff at 7 p.m. Easton football has a bye this week.


Central football travels to New Mexico

The CWU football team travels to play Eastern New Mexico at 5:30 p.m., Saturday. The Wildcats enter the game with a 3-1 overall record, 2-0 in league play. Eastern New Mexico is 2-2 but has yet to win in league.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is crispy chicken Caesar salad, a dinner roll and peaches. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 63 degrees. Sunset is at 6:36 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 43 degrees. Winds will be 10 to 30 mph.  The weekend forecast calls for highs of 70 on Saturday and 72 on Sunday.
