Cheech Marin to appear at Central

Central Washington University presents “An Evening with Cheech Marin: A Life of Art, Culture and Entertainment,” at 7 p.m., Thursday in the McIntyre Music Building as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration. Marin first came to notice as a member of the Cheech and Chong comedy duo in the early 1970s and has had a career that spans comedy, acting and directing. Marin also is a leading advocate for Chicano art. The presentation is free to the public. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and people are encouraged to arrive early to get a seat.


Adult activity center closed

The Ellensburg Adult Activity Center is closed today due to unforeseen staffing issues. The center resumes normal hours on Monday.


Buskers in the Burg is on Saturday

Buskers in the Burg is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, in downtown Ellensburg. The event features buskers performing through the downtown core. People can vote on their favorite performers with the winner performing on the Unity Park main stage. The event features the Blue Bear Puppet Lab in a roaming puppet production. This year’s program is “A Murder of Crows.” Mini buskers join the event for the first time with three youth performers from Make Music Ellensburg appearing on the main stage.


Central to honor Dorothy Purser

CWU will honor the late Dorothy Purser in two dedication ceremonies today.  A room in CWU’s Health Sciences Building will be dedicated to Purser in a ceremony at 1:30 p.m. The former Purser Hall will be rededicated as Purser Annex as part of the remodeled Nicholson Pavilion at 3 p.m. Purser, who died in 2002, spent 47 years at Central and helped create the university’s paramedicine program in 1974.


Buddy’s Memorial Service is Sunday

A memorial and reception service honoring Buddy, the African gray parrot who lived at the Ellensburg Pet Center for more than 40 years, is at 1 p.m., Sunday, at Brookside Funeral Home and Crematory. The service will include a slide show of Buddy with photos and videos from throughout her life.


Registration open for haunted house driving tour

Registration is open for the Ellensburg Haunted House Tour sponsored by David and Erin Chamberlin of Coldwell Banker Central. The tour takes place Oct. 28-31. People who want to enter their Ellensburg homes in the tour can find information on The Chamberlin Team website. Registration is open until Oct. 13. A map will be available and a Halloween-themed playlist will be posted on the Ellensburg Community website to listen to while on the self-guided tour.


SPORTS

High school football is on tap tonight

Kittitas County high school football teams take to the road tonight. Ellensburg looks for its first win of the season at Toppenish. Kittitas travels to Goldendale trying to improve to 3-1. The 2-1 Cle Elum-Roslyn team visits White Swan. All games kickoff at 7 p.m. Easton travels to play Mary M. Knight in Elma at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Jaguars are searching for their first win.

 

Cowboy Cross set for Rodeo Arena

The Ellensburg Rodeo Arena hosts Cowboy Cross Bike and Bulls on Saturday. The event features an endurocross race and a bull riding event. The doors open at noon with the main event at 5 p.m. The Kittitas County Sheriff Association hosts the beer garden with proceeds going to the Ryan Thompson Memorial youth fishing derby, Cops and Bobbers.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is grilled chicken and corn rice bowl and applesauce. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.


WEATHER                                                                              

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 75 degrees. Sunset is at 6:48 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 43 degrees. Winds will be 15 to 25 mph. The weekend forecast calls for highs of 78 on Saturday and 64 on Sunday.
