Fire at apartment north of campus

Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue responded to a fire at the Campus Village apartments on 18th Avenue at 1:50 a.m. on Sunday. All occupants were evacuated and accounted for.  One tenant sought medical treatment for minor injuries.  The fire reportedly started on a second-floor balcony. The fire was contained to the northwest corner of the property and extinguished by about 4 a.m., Sunday. Multiple cars parked behind the units were damaged in the fire. The cause is under investigation.


Ellensburg City Council meets Monday

The Ellensburg City Council meets at 7 p.m., Monday, in the City Hall Council Chambers. The agenda includes a presentation of the Ellensburg Police Department 2024 Community Survey results, and a Poetry Month reading and update from Poet Laureate Marie Marchand.


City reapplies late fees

The city is re-implementing late fees for utility payments as of April. The past-due fees were suspended while the city transitioned to its new online billing system.


Jazz band visits CWU today

The North Texas One O’Clock Lab Band led by Alan Baylock will be joined by the CWU Jazz Band 1 in a performance at the McIntyre Music Building Concert Hall at 7 p.m., tonight. The One O'Clock Lab Band is a multi-Grammy Award-nominated group, and has been regarded as one of the best college jazz ensembles in the country for decades. The concert is free.


Book Club Tea is today

The Friends of the Public Library Book Club Tea is at 7 p.m., today at Hal Holmes Community Center. Jerrol’s owner Rolf Williams is the guest speaker. There will be tea, books and ice cream. The event is free and open to the public.


Meetings focus of Springwood Ranch

The public can learn more about the status of the Springwood Ranch at an interagency public meeting at 6 p.m., Tuesday, at the Thorp School. The 3,600-acre Springwood Ranch was purchased by the Trust for Public Lands in 2023. Its future involves a cooperative effort between multiple jurisdictions and agencies, including Kittitas County, the Yakama Nation, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Bureau of Land Management. An update on the ranch also is on the agenda for the state Fish and Wildlife Commission meeting on Friday in Olympia.


Learn about chimpanzee sanctuary on Tuesday

The Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest will present about its Cle Elum facility at 4 p.m., Tuesday at the Upper Kittitas County Senior Center. The presentation will give insight on the daily lives of the chimpanzees at the sanctuary and the work of the primate behavioral specialists to provide care and enrichment for the residents.


LUNCH                                                        

The FISH Open Table Lunch is broccoli cheddar soup, a dinner roll and apples. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
