City and county select Cold Weather Shelter site
A facility at Western Village on the northern side of the Ellensburg Arena will be the temporary location of the Cold Weather Shelter this winter. The shelter will be operated by HopeSource with a volunteer staff and open from mid-November through March. The Kittitas Valley Ministerial Association previously ran the shelter, housing it on a rotating basis in Ellensburg churches. The Western Village facility is 2,000 square feet, and has an open congregate area, commercial kitchen, restrooms and fenced access. Volunteer signup information is available on the city’s website.
Storm power outages
Saturday night’s wind and lightning storm led to multiple power outages throughout Ellensburg, including Central Washington University. Crews responded to a pole fire and had to de-energize two additional feeds to extinguish the fire and conduct repairs. Power had been restored to all locations by 5 a.m., Sunday.
City Council meets Monday
The Ellensburg City Council meets at 7 p.m., tonight, in the Council Chambers. Presentation of the 2023 Police Report and the 2023 Crime Report are on the agenda.
Night Market on Wednesday
The Ellensburg Downtown Associations Night Market is from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, on Pine Street between Third and Fourth avenues. There will be vendors from across the state, food, music and children’s crafts.
Lodging tax workshops this week
The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce presents two instructional workshops to assist those considering filling out a 2025 Consolidated Lodging Tax grant this week. A workshop is from 5:30 to 7 p.m., tonight at the chamber’s Ellensburg office on Main Street. The other workshop is from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Thursday, at the Business Development Center at 216 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Cle Elum. This grant is for funding of 2025 projects and events.
CWU professor earns honor
Central Washington University English professor Matthew Martinson received the 2023-24 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Faculty Mentor Award from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Martinson was chosen because of his dedication to the students, athletes, and young adults he encounters each day.
Cop on Top raises money for Special Olympics
Ellensburg Police Department’s Cop on Top event last Thursday at Fred Meyer raised $5,200 for Special Olympics. The Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office and Corrections Center, CWU Police and Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue participated in the event, which distributed 125 backpacks filled with school supplies to children.

Central grads continue rugby careers
The USA Rugby Women’s Eagles National Team features two CWU graduates on it travel squad competing in Japan. Keia Mae Segapolu has competed in 10 international competitions and she will be joined by Tessa Hann making her debut
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is vegetarian chili, cornbread and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
