Buddy passes away
Buddy, the African Gray Parrot, who held residence at the Ellensburg Pet Center, passed away Saturday. Buddy, nearing 40 years old, was a fixture at the Pearl Street business, drawing fans and admirers in person and on Facebook. Buddy had lived at the Pet Center since she was a year old.
Whipsaw hosts Ladies' Night
Whipsaw Brewing hosts a Ladies' Night from 2 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, with a range of outfits from Sparkling M Ranch Boutique, accessories from Blonde Dog 509, food by Santana Grill and music by Kyle James. It is an all-ages event.
Student trustee appointed
Eliasib Alvarado has been appointed as the student trustee on the Central Washington University Board of Trustees by Gov. Jay Inslee. Alvarado is a sophomore music education major at CWU. As the student trustee, Alvarado will be a full-voting member of the board.
Grant deadline this week
The deadline for applying for five city grant programs is 5 p.m., Friday. Available grant programs are Community, Park Partnership, Water Quality, Historic Preservation and Arts Commission. Information and application materials are available on the city’s website.
County Fair opens Thursday
The Kittitas County Fair opens at 10 a.m., Thursday. The grand opening ceremony is at noon at the Main Stage. The carnival starts at noon. 4-H competition throughout the day includes market hogs, market steers, market goats, rabbit agility and poultry agility. The fair runs through Sept. 2.
Ellensburg Rodeo begins Thursday
The Ellensburg Rodeo opens with first-go Slack at 8 a.m., Thursday. The Rodeo concludes with the finals on Labor Day.
Rockin the Chutes is Thursday
Craig Morgan headlines the Rockin’ the Chutes concert at 8 p.m., Thursday, Behind the Chutes at the Ellensburg Rodeo Arena. Matt Stell also will perform. Ticket information is on the Ellensburg Rodeo website. This is a 21-plus event.
Market Sale is Friday
The Kittitas County Fair Livestock Market Sale is at 11 a.m., Friday, in Bloom Pavilion. The sale supports 4-H members and the program.
Bear specialists to speak in Rolsyn
State Department of Fish and Wildlife bear specialists will speak at a presentation from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Sept. 4, at the Masonic Hall, next to the Roslyn Post Office. Information on bear behavior and safety tips for living in bear country will be shared.

Weststar is Wednesday
The Weststar Best of the West Roping is Wednesday at the Ellensburg Rodeo Arena. The event starts with pro-am roping at 1:30 p.m., followed by open roping at 3:30 p.m. The competition is free and open to the public.
Fall sports practices start
High School football practices are underway with the remaining high school athletic teams starting this week. Cross country, girls soccer, volleyball and swimming practices all begin today.
CWU volleyball ranked 22nd
The Central Washington University volleyball team was ranked 22nd in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II preseason poll. The Wildcats open their season at the Western Washington University Invitational from Sept. 5 through 7, facing seventh-ranked Metro State in the first match.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is caramelized onion bacon mac and cheese, peas, carrots and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
