The Kittitas County Fair is right around the corner and you'll need to keep an eye out for drivers just like these.


NEWS

Rodeo/fair week is here.

A year’s worth of work, preparation and planning comes to fruition this week with the start of the Kittitas County Fair and the Ellensburg Rodeo. The fair gates open at 10 a.m., Thursday. This is Super 1 Day with $5 admission tickets for sale at Super 1. The Ellensburg Rodeo opens with slack competition at 7 a.m., Thursday.


Band on the march

The Ellensburg High School marching band takes to the streets in the evenings this week to prepare for Saturday’s Ellensburg Rodeo Parade. The band will march in Grasslands tonight, in the Craig’s Hill area on Tuesday, Briarwood on Wednesday, the Mountain View Park neighborhoods on Thursday and Capitol Avenue/EHS neighborhoods on Friday. The band heads out at about 5:30 each evening.


WestStar Roping event Wednesday.

The annual WestStar Best of the Best Team Roping competition takes place Wednesday at the Ellensburg Rodeo Arena. The pro-am starts at 10 a.m., with open roping at 1 p.m.


Hoedown set for Wednesday

The annual Hoedown in the Downtown is from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday in Unity Park. The Hoedown features musical performances by Abbigale and the Dusty 45s, a beer garden, kids corral activities and a chance to meet the 2003 Ellensburg Rodeo Royal Court. The event is organized by the Ellensburg Downtown Association.


Big day at Morgan

Morgan Middle School students can pick up their class schedules and check out Chromebooks from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday at the middle school.


Freshmen orientation at EHS

Ellensburg High School’s freshmen orientation is on Tuesday. The schedule includes a family barbecue at 11:30 a.m., parent orientation from noon to 12:30 p.m., and a student program from noon to 3 p.m.


Sneak peek for students

Cle Elum-Roslyn students and families get a chance to check out the schools before the start of the year on Wednesday. Freshmen orientation at Cle Elum-Roslyn High School is 3 to 4 p.m. Walter Strom Middle School’s Family Engagement Night from 5 to 7 p.m. This is a chance for students to get a hard copy of their class schedule. Cle Elum-Roslyn Elementary School is holding a Curriculum/Back to School night from 5 to 7 p.m.


Free backpacks

Free backpacks for kids are available at the Ellensburg Public Library while supplies last. The backpacks were donated by FISH and the Kittitas County Health Department.


Beware of blasting

Interstate 90 will be closed eastbound at Milepost 63 and western at Exit 70 near Easton at 7 p.m., Tuesday for rock blasting.


EVENTS

International Overdose Awareness Day is Thursday

An International Overdose Awareness Day event is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday at Mountain View Park. The event is to raise awareness and commemorate those who have been lost to overdose.


Texas band to play at Old Skool’s

Trans femme, country/folk band Red Faire Dance Party from Denton, Texas will play at Old Skool’s at 7 tonight. Local band, Plant Food, also will perform. This is an all-ages show and donations are requested.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table lunch is lemon herb chicken and rice soup, garlic toast and mixed fruit. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 97 degrees. Sunset is at 7:49 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 63 degrees. Winds will be from 5 to 10 mph during the day and 20 to 30 mph at night, with a few showers developing after midnight.
