Countywide burn ban enacted

Kittitas County extended its burn ban countywide on Saturday. The burn ban previously covered the lower valley from Thorp to Vantage. The ban prohibits open burning. Propane grills and charcoal barbecues are allowed, except for Roslyn, which enacted a ban Friday that also prohibits charcoal barbecues. The County Fire Marshal continues to monitor conditions and could modify the ban as necessary. Two small fires, under two acres, were reported in the county on Saturday.


City Council meets tonight

The Ellensburg City Council meets at 7 p.m., tonight in Council Chambers. The agenda includes a discussion of the city’s camping on public property regulations in light of a recent Supreme Court ruling giving cities the ability to enforce the camping ban without providing adequate shelter for people experiencing homelessness.


County holds hearing to set price for First and Last Chance Tavern property

The Kittitas County commissioners will hold a public hearing in the commissioners’ auditorium at 2 p.m., Tuesday to set a minimum price for property located at 1200 E. University Way, the address of the First and Last Chance Tavern. The county purchased the tavern property in 2016 as part of the Kittitas Valley Event Center expansion project.


Candidate forums scheduled

Primary candidate forums will be held in Ellensburg on Tuesday and Cle Elum on Wednesday. The Ellensburg forum will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hal Holmes Community Center and the Cle Elum forum is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Centennial Center. The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce and League of Women Voters of Kittitas County sponsor the events.


Book Mobile hits the road

The Ellensburg Bookmobile makes the rounds each Tuesday evening in July. Starting at 5 p.m., the bookmobile stops at Millpond, Crestview Apartments on Alder Street, Rainier Street and the Hillside Mobile Park on Cascade Way. Kids in grades K to 8 can check out up to three books.


Author to speak on Woody Guthrie

Joel Underwood, author of “That Ribbon of Highway: Woody Guthrie in the Pacific Northwest” will speak at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday at Hal Holmes Community Center as part of the Ellensburg Public Library and Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau series. The presentation is free and open to the public.


Energy code meeting on Wednesday

The City of Ellensburg’s Building Division is holding an information session about new Washington State Energy Code updates from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, in the Council Chambers. The presentation includes a Q & A session. The Washington State Energy Code was amended in 2021, and changes went into effect on March 15. The presentation covers changes in the new code, related to residential and commercial building projects.


LUNCH                                                        

The FISH Open Table Lunch is Italian white bean soup, garlic toast and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
