Principal hired for Ida Nason Aronica
Heather Burfeind was hired as the principal for Ida Nason Aronica Elementary School. Burfeind replaces JoAnne Duncan who resigned at the end of the school year. Burfeind’s career includes working as a teacher at Lincoln Elementary School, Morgan Middle School and Ellensburg High School, where she served as activities coordinator and ASB adviser. She most recently served as assistant principal at Selah High School. Burfeind was one of 14 candidates for the position.
Another fire at Irene Rinehart
A second fire in less than two weeks was reported at Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park on Friday. The fire was called in during the afternoon and contained by about 7 p.m. The park was closed late Friday but reopened on Saturday. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Night shift road work this week
Night shift road construction will start on three projects in Ellensburg this week. Starting Monday, crews stripe University Way from Okanogan Street to the BNSF overpass. Crews will replace a damaged signal pole at the Mountain View Avenue-Ruby Street intersection beginning Tuesday. Crews will install hardware for traffic signal cabinets the University Way-18th Avenue, and University Way-Main Street intersections on Monday or Wednesday. Each project may involve traffic disruptions.
Cookbook author speaks on Wednesday
Amanda Zito, author of “The Motorcycle Camp Cookbook,” will hold a book signing and cooking demonstration from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, at the Ellensburg Public Library. The event is part of the library’s Adventure Begins at Your Library summer reading program.
Coffee with Council on Thursday
The monthly Coffee with City Council event is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, at the Lunchbox Café. The event features two council members sharing coffee and conversation.
Grant applications available
Applications are now available for several grants on the city’s website. Grant programs are Community Grants, Parks Partnership Grants, Historic Preservation Grants, Water Quality Grants and Arts Commission Grants. Applications are accepted through Aug. 30. Law and Justice grants available
The Kittitas County Law and Justice Council offers mini-grants to organizations and community programs that support the law and justice system. Each year, about $25,000.00 is earmarked from the 1/10th of 1 percent law and justice sales tax for this grant program. This can include equipment materials, new programs and projects that support the Law and Justice Council goals and benefit the public and law and justice community. Applications are available at the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office 307 W. Umptanum Road or on the Sheriff’s Office website
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is a Tuscan white bean soup, garlic toast and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
