Ellensburg Rodeo begins today

The Ellensburg Rodeo opens with first-go Slack at 8 a.m., today. The Rodeo concludes with the finals on Labor Day. Friday’s rodeo competition starts at 6:45 p.m. Ticket information is available on the Ellensburg Rodeo website.


Rockin the Chutes is tonight

Craig Morgan headlines the Rockin’ the Chutes concert at 8 p.m., today, Behind the Chutes at the Ellensburg Rodeo Arena. Matt Stell also will perform. Ticket information is on the Ellensburg Rodeo website. This is a 21-plus event.


County Fair opens today

The Kittitas County Fair opens at 10 a.m., Thursday. The grand opening ceremony is at noon at the Main Stage. The carnival starts at noon. 4-H competition throughout the day includes market hogs, market steers, market goats, rabbit agility and poultry agility. The fair runs through Sept. 2.


Keep your eyes and ears out for the band

The Ellensburg High School Marching Band practices for Saturday’s Ellensburg Rodeo Parade by marching on city streets each evening this week. The band marches Morgan Middle School today and at Memorial Park on Friday. The band leaves the high school at about 6 p.m.


Traffic changes around fairgrounds

As Labor Day weekend approaches changes slow traffic and protect pedestrians, including temporary stop signs placed on Chestnut Street intersections in front of the fairgrounds.


Road closures for the parade route

Residents must be ready for road closures throughout Ellensburg for the Rodeo Parade on Saturday. Portions of Alder Street, University Way, Pearl Street, Pine Street, Second Avenue and Fifth Avenue will be closed starting at 7:15 a.m., Saturday.


Market Sale is Friday

The Kittitas County Fair Livestock Market Sale is at 11 a.m., Friday, in Bloom Pavilion. The sale supports 4-H members and the program.


Grant deadline this week

The deadline for applying for five city grant programs is 5 p.m., Friday. Available grant programs are Community, Park Partnership, Water Quality, Historic Preservation and Arts Commission. Information and application materials are available on the city’s website.


High Country Log Show this weekend

The High Country Log Show is on Saturday and Sunday at Runje Field in Roslyn. The show features several logging events including chainsaw competition, high climbing, hand bucking, axe throwing and unlimited hot saws. The show starts at 1 p.m. each day.


Coal Miners Dinner is Saturday

The Roslyn Ronald Cle Elum Heritage Club hosts the annual Coal Miner’s Dinner from 5 to 8 p.m., Saturday at Hawthorne Hall in Ronald. It is an evening of stories from miners and their families, food provided by the Ronald Community Club and music by the Rusty Cage Acoustic Duo. Entry is $5 by donation with food and beverage available for purchase.


King Coal crowned on Sunday

Jim “Eddy” Russom will be crowned 2024 King Coal at 9:30 a.m., Sunday at the Coal Miner’s Memorial in Roslyn as part of the Coal Miner Days festivities. The parade will follow at 11 a.m.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is pork posole served with tortilla strips and sour cream, and oranges. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
