NEWS

Off to a fair start

The Kittitas County Fair has arrived with the opening of the gates at 10 a.m. and the opening ceremony at noon. The fair runs through Monday. Friday is Patriot with free admission to all military veterans and Monday is half-price day with half off all admission tickets.


Slack start of rodeo

The Ellensburg Rodeo got underway at 7 this morning with slack competition for the first go of timed events, with a second round of slack set for 9 a.m. Friday morning. The Friday night rodeo starts at 6:45 p.m. The theme is Patriot Night. Rodeo competition continues on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.


Familiar signs, new locations

To help accommodate vehicular and pedestrian traffic near the Kittitas County Fairgrounds, stop signs have been placed on Chestnut Street and Fifth and Sixth avenues, creating four-way stops at those intersections. The signs will remain through Monday. There also will be road closures along the Ellensburg Rodeo Parade route on Saturday morning.


Chutes to be rocking tonight

Tonight’s Rockin’ the Chutes concert features Sawyer Brown with Chayce Beckham. The concert starts at 8 p.m. The standing-room-only show is held in the Behind the Chutes Beer Garden and is a 21-plus event. Tickets are $60.


Band on the march

The Ellensburg High School will march in, the Mountain View Park neighborhoods tonight and Capitol Avenue/EHS neighborhoods on Friday in preparation for Saturday’s Ellensburg Rodeo Parade. The band heads out at about 5:30 each evening.


Bloom Pavilion expansion celebrated

The ribbon cutting for the Bloom Pavilion expansion will be at 1 p.m., today on the fairgrounds.


Market sale Friday

The Kittitas County Fair Market sale starts at 11 a.m., Friday in Bloom Pavilion. Market sale proceeds go to 4-H members who raise the animals. Last year the community raised $670,000 at the sale. Buyers can bid in person or online. The sale features the 4-H Endowment Trust Fund auction. This year’s endowment animal is a Suffolk-Hampshire lamb raised by Veronica Mattson.


Coal Miners Days this weekend

The Upper County celebrates Coal Miners Days this weekend. Events include Dinner with the Miners at 5 p.m., Saturday at Ronald’s Hawthorne Hall, the posthumous honoring of Fred Fischer as King Coal at 9 a.m., Sunday at the Coal Miners’ Memorial, followed by the Coal Miners’ Day Parade in downtown Roslyn.


SPORTS

CWU sports kickoff

The college sports season starts today with three Central Washington University teams in action. The football team travels to Weber State for a 5 p.m. kickoff. The volleyball team faces Metro State at 2:30 p.m. in San Bernardino, California, and the women’s soccer team faces Cal Poly Humboldt at 3:30 p.m. in Seattle.


Turn on the Friday Night Lights

High school football season gets underway Friday with Ellensburg traveling to Zillah, and Cle Elum-Roslyn heading to Manson. Kickoff for both games is 7 p.m. The Kittitas game at Lake Roosevelt scheduled for Friday was canceled.

EVENTS

International Overdose Awareness Day is today

An International Overdose Awareness Day event is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., today at Mountain View Park. The event is to raise awareness and commemorate those who have been lost to overdose.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table lunch is barbecue chicken, corn on the cobb, cheddar biscuit, baked beans and peaches. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 71 degrees. Sunset is at 7:43 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 52 degrees. There will be rain showers throughout the day. Winds will be from 10 to 15 mph.
