Arrest made in Jack in the Box shooting

The 18-year-old suspect in the March 15 homicide in the Jack in the Box parking lot has been taken into custody on the West Side, according to the Ellensburg Police Department. The Kent Police Department arrested Benny Castizo on Tuesday. Castizo, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, will be prosecuted as an adult and has been charged with first-degree murder for the death of Christian Guthrie of Ellensburg. Despite a large-scale search following the shooting, Castizo escaped apprehension and was thought to be in Western Washington. Castizo will be extradited to Kittitas County.


Tight race in judge primary

Chris Herion received 40 percent of the vote in the primary race for Kittitas County Superior Court Judge Position 1 to advance to the November general election, according to unofficial results. The battle for the second spot on the General Election ballot remains too close to call. As of Tuesday night, Matt Mills held a 60-vote advantage over Margie Alumbaugh at 2,017 votes to 1,957. Herion’s vote total was 2,654.

In the other locally contested race, voters approved Hospital District 2’s Levy Lid Lift for Emergency Medical Services with a 64 percent yes vote. Vote totals were 1,185 yes and 664 no.

The next vote count is Thursday. The election will be certified on Aug. 20.


Lyric writing for teens

The Ellensburg Public Library offers a lyric writing workshop for teens from 3 to 4:30 p.m., today. The workshop features professional musicians.


Learn about opening a farmstand

The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce hosts a farmstand workshop from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., today, at the chamber’s office on Main Street. The workshop covers the regulations, requirements and steps to open a farmstand in Kittitas County.


Special Olympics Pint Night

Iron Horse Brewery Taproom hosts Special Olympics Pint Night from 4 to 8 p.m., today. This is an all-ages event with Bunco and a silent auction benefiting Special Olympics.


Global Heat to perform

Global Heat performs at 6:30 p.m., today at North Alder Street Park as part of the Concerts in the Park series. This concert is sponsored by the Ellensburg Public Library and is the grand finale of its Summer Reading Program. Global Heat is a funk, rock and soul band from Seattle.


“Finding Nemo” is the Friday movie in park

 “Finding Nemo,” will be shown at Veteran’s Memorial Park at about 9 p.m., Friday. The movie, presented by Ellensburg Parks and Recreation, is free. People are encouraged to bring chairs and snacks. Movies are shown every Friday through Aug. 16.


LUNCH                                                        

The FISH Open Table Lunch is a chef salad, a roll and mixed fruit. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
