Ellensburg Safeway off the chopping block

The proposed merger between Albertsons and Kroger, which would have led to the sale of the Ellensburg Safeway, is off. Albertsons, which owns Safeway, called off the merger with Krogers, the owner of Fred Meyer, after recent court rulings called the plan into question. If the merger had gone through, the Ellensburg Safeway would have been sold to the company that operate Piggly Wiggly stores.  


Cocoa and Crafts today

The Ellensburg Public Library hosts Cocoa and Crafts at 6:30, Thursday, in the Hal Holmes Community Center. The adult programming includes making clay ornaments. Sign up at the library.


Free health clinic on Thursday

The Open Door free health clinic is from 6 to 9 p.m., today at Community Health of Central Washington. The clinic includes care ranging from regular check ups, minor cuts and lacerations, sprains and strains, skin rashes and infections, management of known chronic condition, medication refill, exam and sports physicals.


Dance Ensemble presents Nutcracker

The Ellensburg Dance Ensemble presents “The Nutcracker and the Battle for the Key,” at 7 p.m., Friday, and 2 and 7 p.m., Saturday, in McConnell Auditorium. The performance is a family-friendly show featuring live orchestration and talented local dancers ages 8 to adult. Tickets are $22 for general admission.


Dance Barn presents Polar Express

The Dance Barn of Ellensburg presents “Polar Express: Magical Hometown Holiday Journey” at 1 and 6 p.m., Saturday at the Morgan Performing Arts Center. The show features a mix of ballet, contemporary, acro, hip-hop, tap and jazz dance, reflecting the whimsical nature of the story. Throughout the performance, the cast sings iconic songs from the beloved film and book.  


Play Museum's grand opening is on Saturday

The Valley Play Museum celebrates its grand opening at 10 a.m., Saturday, at 1500 W. Dolarway Road, Building 11, Suite 1102. Valley Play Museum is a non-profit organization. The museum is an interactive, hands-on space for children that stimulates curiosity and engages the whole family in learning through play.


“Messiah” sing-a-long is on Saturday

A community-wide “Messiah” Sing-a-long will held at 2 p.m., Saturday, at the United Methodist Church. Part One, commonly called the “Christmas Section,” plus the Hallelujah Chorus will be performed. A limited supply of G. Schirmer scores will be available on loan for the event, but guests are encouraged to bring their scores. No tickets are necessary, but donations are accepted.


Christmas in Washington returns Sunday

Geoffrey Castle’s Celtic Christmas will be performed at 3 and 7 p.m., Sunday at the Morgan Performing Arts Center. This production features the showmanship and fiddle of electric violin maestro Geoffrey Castle, the Seattle Irish Dance Company’s Celtic Dancers and Irish tenor Dan Connolly. Tickets are $30 for general admission.


SPORTS

High school hoops set for Friday

In Friday night high school basketball, Ellensburg welcomes East Valley with the girls’ game at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m. Kittitas travels to Lind-Ritzville with the girls game at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m. Cle Elum-Roslyn visits Mabton with the girls game at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is mac and cheese, peas and carrots and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
