School measures fare well in the county
School measures on Tuesday’s ballot fared well, according to the unofficial results posted on the Kittitas County Auditor’s website. The Cle Elum-Roslyn School District’s capital levy for safety, security, technology and facility improvements is at a 60 percent yes vote. The Thorp School District levy to repair school buses has received a 57 percent yes vote. The Damman School District maintenance of education program and operations levy is at a 71 percent yes vote. The election will be certified on Feb. 21. Overall, the election had a 26 percent turnout.
Cold Weather shelter relocates
The Ellensburg Cold Weather Shelter will be held at the Foursquare Church on Mountain View Avenue today through Monday. The shelter will return to the Western Village facility at the Kittitas Valley Event Center on Tuesday.
Cle Elum Council rejects not-sanctuary city resolution
After listening to public testimony opposed to the city of Cle Eum adopting a resolution stating it was not a sanctuary city, the council voted to remove consideration of the resolution from its meeting agenda Tuesday night. Council member Steven Harper was the only member to vote to leave the resolution on the agenda.
Shaquem Griffin to speak at CWU
Former Seattle Seahawk Shaquem Griffin will speak at Central Washington University at 7 p.m., Thursday in the SURC Ballroom. Griffin made history as the first one-handed player in the National Football League. His presentation is part of Central’s Black History Month celebration and is free and open to the public.
City opens warming center
With frigid temperatures in the forecast, the city will open the lobby between Hal Holmes Community Center and the Ellensburg Public Library at 8 a.m. as a warming center each day this week.
Lions Rock hosts poet
CWU’s Lion Rock Visiting Writers Series welcomes poet and author Marcelo Hernandez Castillo on Thursday. Castillo will give a craft talk at noon in the Brooks Library Student Commons and follow with a public reading at 5 p.m. in the commons. Castillo is the author of “Children of the Land: A Memoir,” and is on the faculty at St. Mary’s College in California.
Valley Theatre presents “Peter and the Star Catcher”
Valley Theatre continues its Winter Play, “Peter and the Star Catcher,” this week at the IOOF Oddfellows Ballroom with performances at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Saturday. The play is based on the novel by Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson. Tickets are $20 for general admission and can be purchased on the Valley Theatre website.
Winterhop Brewfest is on Saturday
The 21st annual Winterhop Brewfest is from noon to 5 p.m., at venues throughout downtown Ellensburg. The event features craft beers from brewers around the region, live music and more. Ticket information is on the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce’s website.
SPORTS
In high school playoff basketball, the Ellensburg boys lost to Grandview, 68-48, in the first round of the league tournament on Tuesday. The Bulldogs host East Valley at 6 p.m., Friday, in a loser-out game. The Kittitas and Cle Elum-Roslyn girls are in the District 5 2B tournament at Moses Lake High School. Kittitas plays Tonasket at 4:30 p.m., today, in a loser-out game. Cle Elum-Roslyn plays at 2 p.m., Saturday against a not-yet-determined opponent.
CWU hoops on the road this weekend
The CWU basketball teams hit the road this weekend. T Wildcat women and men travel to Montana St.-Billings today with the women’s game at 4:15 p.m. and the men at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, the teams are at Seattle Pacific with the men at 2 p.m. and the women at 4:15 p.m.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is chicken teriyaki, stir-fried vegetables, Jasmine rice and Mandarin oranges. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
