Ellensburg Safeway on list to sell

The Ellensburg Safeway would be sold to C&S Wholesale Grocers if the merger of Kroger, the owner of Fred Meyer, and Albertsons, which owns Safeway, is allowed to proceed. The list of 124 stores that would be sold as part of the $25 billion merger was released on Tuesday. C&S is based in New Hampshire. The Cle Elum Safeway would not be sold as part of the merger. Regulators are asking the federal court to pause the merger to investigate it for possible antitrust violations.


Surplus sales this week

There are two public surplus sales this week. The city of Roslyn’s sealed-bid surplus sale is today through Saturday. Information is at City Hall. Items for sale include a 1982 Ford Fire Truck. Central Washington University’s surplus sale is today through Saturday at the surplus warehouse on 14th Avenue and B Street. Items for sale include a LaMarzocco espresso machine.


“Anastasia: The Musical” opens Friday

The Valley Theatre production of “Anastasia: The Musical” premieres at 7 p.m., Friday at Morgan Performing Arts Center. The play tells the story of what became of Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov. Performances are scheduled for 2 and 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 7 p.m., July 19 and 2 and 7 p.m., July 20.  Tickets are $20 for general admission and are available on the Valley Theatre website.


“Elemental” is Friday movie in park

“Elemental” will be shown at Veteran’s Memorial Park at about 9 p.m., Friday. The movies, presented by Ellensburg Parks and Recreation, are free. People are encouraged to bring chairs and snacks. Movies are shown every Friday through Aug. 2.


Candidate forums scheduled

Primary candidate forums will be held in Ellensburg on July 16 and Cle Elum on July 17. The Ellensburg forum will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hal Holmes Community Center and the Cle Elum forum is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Centennial Center. The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce and League of Women Voters of Kittitas County sponsor the events.


Summer chip seal starts July 22

Ellensburg’s annual roadway chip-seal program is July 22 to 25.  The chip-seal schedule is linked off the city’s Facebook page People who live on the affected roads asked to move their vehicles on dates the crews are scheduled, and not water their yards close to the street. Affected roads will have No Parking signs posted at least 24 hours before the start of work. Access to city streets during the chip-seal process is limited.


SPORTS

Learn to disc golf

Teenagers can learn to play disc golf from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., today at the Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park course. If interested, register at the Ellensburg Public Library Youth Services desk.


Chance to run the tunnel

The Snoqualmie Tunnel 5K Glow Run is Saturday. Registration is at 9 a.m. with the first race at 10 a.m. For one day only the tunnel is partially lit with LED lights and participants are outfitted with glow gear. Registration and cost information is on the Snoqualmie Tunnel 5K Glow Run website.


Remote control races on Saturday

Remote control boat races will be held at Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday. The grass area and upper pond are closed to the public during this event.


LUNCH                                                        

The FISH Open Table Lunch is cheese ravioli, garlic-lemon green beans and mixed fruit. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 94 degrees. Sunset is at 8:56 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 62 degrees. Winds will be 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.
