Ellensburg Community Morning Show, Thursday, July 4


Fireworks will be shot off from the Kittitas Valley Event Center in Ellensburg and Fireman's Park in Cle Elum.

Planning for fireworks

There will be two public aerial fireworks displays tonight. The Patriot Night Under the Lights celebration at the Kittitas Valley Event Center includes a firework display at 9:45 p.m. The Upper County’s Pioneer Days celebration features a fireworks show at dusk. The fireworks are shot off at Fireman’s Park and are visible anywhere in downtown Cle Elum.


Personal fireworks are prohibited on July 4 in all jurisdictions, except for unincorporated Kittitas County and the city of Kittitas.


Cooling centers to open

With the temperature forecasted to climb over the next several days, possibly reaching 104 by Tuesday, Hal Holmes Community Center will open as a cooling center starting on Friday. The center will be open from noon to 7 p.m., Friday, 2 to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and noon to 7 p.m. on Monday. People are welcome to bring snacks or a dinner. Family-friendly movies will be shown.


Country western stars featured at Patriot Night Under the Lights

Country-western singer Aaron Tippin headlines the Patriot Night Under the Lights celebration at the Kittitas Valley Event Center tonight. The doors open at 6 p.m. and Huckleberry Road performs at 7 p.m., followed by Tippin at 8:30 p.m. A Patriot After-Party with Keith Anderson follows the fireworks display at 10 p.m. Tickets are $50 and children under 10 are free when accompanied by a ticket holder. There will be a family zone and a beer garden at the show.


Firemen serve up breakfast

Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue Local 663 serves a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m., today at the KVFR station on Mountain View Avenue. Donations are accepted.


Boulet Theatre presents “The Masked Canary”

The Boulet Theatre production of “The Masked Canary” opens at 7 p.m., Friday at the Centennial Center in Cle Elum. Performances are also scheduled for Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Saturday’s show is a benefit dinner fundraiser. Regular show tickets are $10 and the fundraiser is $75 with only advance tickets sold.


Holiday kicks off in Cle Elum

Pioneer Days start today with an Independence Day Celebration from 2 to 10 p.m. at Memorial Park in Cle Elum. There will be a kids’ zone, food trucks, a beer garden and a lineup of live music. The music begins with Micah J at 4:30 p.m., followed by Jared Graham at 6:15 p.m. and the American Honey Band at 8:15 p.m. Pioneer Days continues throughout the weekend.


First Friday events planned

First Friday events in Ellensburg include Gallery One’s opening reception for its Trimpin exhibit and Ellensburg Community Radio’s jam-band party at the Ink Building at 405 Main St., where people can listen to legendary jam bands such as the Grateful Dead and the Dave Matthews Band and are encouraged to chill out while wearing tie-dye. First Friday is from 5 to 7 p.m. at venues throughout the downtown.


Kittitas celebrates Saturday

Kittitas celebrates the Independence Day weekend with a celebration from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday at Gazebo Park. There will be arts and crafts booths during the day and a street dance with live music at night.


Movies in the park underway

Ellensburg’s Movies in the Park program features “Wish” at around 9 p.m., Friday, at Veterans’ Memorial Park. The free movies are shown on Friday nights at the park through Aug. 2.  People are asked to bring chairs and snacks.


Pioneer Days Parade on Saturday

The Pioneer Days Parade at 10 a.m., Saturday, in downtown Cle Elum headlines the weekend community festival. Other Saturday activities include Roslyn Riders Play Day, Ronald Heritage Festival, live music downtown, dock diving dogs and the Pioneer Days Queen reception. Sunday events include the Kiwanis Youth Fishing Derby and the Fireman’s Pioneer Breakfast.


Pfenning Road project starts July 8                                         

The Pfenning Road improvement project between Vantage Highway and Radio Road starts on July 8. Work includes utility improvements, sidewalk and stormwater swale improvements and a new driving surface. The area will have detours, and the project will continue through early September.


SPORTS

5K on July 4

The Ellensburg Morning Rotary Firecracker 5K is today at Rotary Park. The event features a 5K run at 5K Run at 8:30 a.m. and a Kids Run at 9:45 a.m. This is a family-friendly race and all proceeds go toward the Ellensburg Morning Rotary Local Foundation to support a 4-H animal that will be donated to FISH.


LUNCH                                                        

The FISH Open Table is closed today and Friday for the Independence Day holiday.


WEATHER                                                                              

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 93 degrees. Sunset is at 8:59 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 57 degrees. Winds will be 10 to 20 mph.
