High School graduation this week
Every high school in Kittitas County celebrates graduation this week. The Ellensburg High School graduation is 7 p.m., today in Nicholson Pavilion. Thorp celebrates graduation at 6 p.m., Friday at the Thorp School. The Easton School graduation is at 11 a.m., Saturday, the Easton School multipurpose room. Cle Elum-Roslyn High School’s graduation is at 2 p.m., Saturday, in the Walter Strom Middle School gym. The Kittitas Secondary School graduation is at 7 p.m., Saturday, at the secondary school.
First Friday this week
Venues throughout downtown Ellensburg participate in First Friday activities this week. In addition to artwork displays, multiple locations feature music. The Kittitas County Open Show awards will be announced at Gallery One.
CWU graduation ceremonies set
Central Washington University holds morning and afternoon graduation ceremonies on Saturday at Tomlinson Stadium. The student speaker at the 9 a.m. ceremony is Maria Cristina Carrillo Espinoza. Rochelle Saucedo-Mendoza is speaking at the 2 p.m. ceremony. The morning ceremony is for the College of Arts and Humanities and College of Sciences. The afternoon ceremony is for College of Business, College of Education and Professional Studies. Tessa Mollenberg will deliver the student address at the CWU-Des Moines ceremony on Sunday in Kent. The graduate students hooding and commencement ceremony is at 6 p.m., Friday, in Nicholson Pavilion.
Rodeo City Repair Café this weekend
The Rodeo City Repair Café is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery Shop on Brick Road. Volunteers help repair household appliances, tools, furniture, bicycles and clothing.
Dean Nicholson closed next week
Dean Nicholson Boulevard will be closed between Wildcat Way and Walnut Street from June 11 to 13 to connect the water line serving the new Central Washington University North Academic Building. The road will be plated and open to vehicles during non-construction hours.
Sleep Center meeting location to be moved
The Sleep Center meeting with the Ellensburg City Council and the Kittitas County commissioners on June 13 will not happen at the Armory as earlier announced due to technical issues with that meeting space. A new location for the meeting will be announced this week.
Picnic in Parks volunteers need
FISH Community Food Bank seeks volunteers for it Picnic in the Parks summer meals program for youth. The program operates in 20 locations throughout the county and expects a record number of participants this summer. Contact Elise at volunteering@kvfish.org for more information.
CWU professor named Fulbright Scholar
Central Washington University geology professor Bob Hickey was named a Fulbright Scholar this spring. Hickey will travel to Hungary as a Fulbright Specialist in August and September, working alongside colleagues at the University of Pécs to develop a Geographic Information Systems curriculum for continuing education and non-majors. He is the fourth Fulbright Scholar from the CWU faculty since the 2022-23 academic year.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is pulled pork sandwich, roasted corn and peppers and apples. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
