Snowpack falling short of needs

With the Yakima Upper Basin snowpack at 81 percent of the median as of March 1, the Bureau of Reclamation projects that water supply will not fully meet irrigation demands this summer. While senior water rights holders will receive 100% full entitlements, junior water rights holders will receive 72%.


Name of suspect and victim in shooting

The search continues for the 17-year-old male suspect in the fatal shooting of a man in the Jack in the Box parking lot last Friday. The suspect has been identified in court filings as Benny Lee Castizo. The victim was identified by the Kittitas County Coroner as Christian Guthrie, 21, of Ellensburg. The Ellensburg Police set up a tip line at 509-517-6265 to assist in the investigation.


City council votes to support KITTCOM ballot issue

The City Council to support the April 23 ballot issue asking voters to increase sales tax by two-tenths of 1 percent to support KITTCOM Emergency Communications services. Within the city of Ellensburg, the measure would increase sales tax from 8.4 to 8.6 percent.


City receives grant funding

Ellensburg was recently notified it received two grants. The city was awarded a $272,500 State Department of Natural Resources Forestry assistance grant for its Urban Forestry Management Plan and Tree Ordinance update. The state Department of Ecology awards the city a $400,000 grant to model the city’s storm system within the city limits and the UGA.


Coffee with Council today

This month’s Coffee with Council is at 3 p.m., today at D&M Coffee Downtown. Two council members will attend and share conversation and coffee.


Chamber Gala on Thursday

The annual Chamber Awards Gala is 6 p.m., today, in the Student Union Ballroom. Business awards will be announced and there will be a silent auction. The price of the ticket includes dinner.


Plots available at community garden

Plots are available for rent at the Wipple Park Community Garden in West Ellensburg. The cost is $20 per plot with a maximum of three plots. There are 31 ground-level beds, seven of which are ADA-accessible. The rental season starts April 1. To secure a garden bed you must register in person at the Kittitas Valley Memorial Pool.


Pints for Mount Rainier

Dru Bru-Snoqualmie Pass hosts a Pints for the Park fundraiser for Washington State National Parks Fund projects in the Mount Rainier National Park at 6 p.m., Friday. A $1 from every pint and $4 from every pitcher will be donated to WSNP.


SPORTS

CWU rugby captain nominated for award

Tessa Hann, the captain of the CWU women’s rugby team, has been nominated for the MA Sorenson Award, which honors the top women’s collegiate player in the nation. MA Sorensen was a pioneer in the sport as a player, coach, and doctor.

 

LUNCH                                                        

The FISH Open Table Lunch is Jamaican jerk chicken, rice, mixed vegetables, pineapple salsa and Mandarin oranges. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
