DOJ report being finalized

The federal Department of Justice’s report on its investigation into the Ellensburg School District is being finalized, according to Ellensburg School Superintendent Troy Tornow. On Wednesday Tornow reported to the School Board that the corrective actions will involve a three-year process. DOJ investigators visited the Ellensburg School District in February in response to reports of harassment and discrimination against students based on sexual orientation, gender identity, race and national origin.


New four-way stop coming

The City Council updated the traffic code at Monday’s meeting to create a new four-way stop and lower the speed limit on a portion of Pfenning Road. The intersection of Helena Avenue and Walnut Street will be converted from a two-way to an all-way stop. According to the city’s analysis development in the area will increase traffic enough to warrant the intersection. The speed limit on Pfennng Road from Vantage Highway to Radio Road will be lowered from 35 to 25 mph. A recently completed road project narrowed lanes and added dedicated bicycle lanes.


CWU Theatre production opens Friday

The Central Washington University Theatre production of “John Proctor is the Villian,” opens at 7:30 p.m., Friday, in the Tower Theater. The play follows a group of high school students as they study Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Information on tickets and the times and dates of other performances is on the CWU Theatre Department website.


Recitals this week at CWU

Concerts scheduled at CWU this week include a percussion ensemble concert at 7 p.m., Thursday, and a saxophone studio recital at 7 p.m., Friday. All performances are in the McIntyre Music Building and are free and open to the public.


Audubon meeting addresses dinosaurs among us

“The Dinosaurs Among Us,” is the topic of the Kittitas County Audubon Society meeting at 7 p.m., Thursday, in Hal Holmes Community Center. Kim Adelson, the vice president and education committee chair of the Black Hills Audubon Society will make the presentation. It is free and open to the public.


High school fall play concludes this weekend

The Ellensburg High School Fall Play production of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” ends this weekend at the Morgan Performing Arts Center. 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 7 p.m., Friday, and 2 and 7 p.m., Saturday. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students.


Nature of Night is Saturday

CWU College of Science presents Nature of Night from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, in the Science Building. Nature of Night features an exploration of night-time science with activities, displays and the planetarium. The all-ages event is free and open to the public.


Kittitas school hosts holiday bazaar

The Kittitas High School Holiday Bazaar is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, at the secondary school. There will be more than 30 vendors with crafts, jewelry, home décor and more.  The Class of 2028 is selling raffle times and there will be free photos with Santa.


Shop with a Cop and Firefighter needs community support

Donations are needed to help support this year’s Shop wth a Cop and Firefighter. Donation information is on the Kittitas County Shop with a Cop and a Firefighter Facebook page. Taneum Creek Brewing in Cle Elum is hosting a Pint Night from 4 to 7 p.m., today, with a $1 from every pint sold going to the event.


Choir concert on Sunday

The CWU University Chorale, Wildcat Chorus, Vox Divina and Chamber Choir will perform at 4 p.m., Sunday, in the McIntyre Music Building Concert Hall. The choirs will present a variety of music from many singing traditions in the “Breeze of Fall” concert. Tickets are $15 for general admission with all proceeds going to operational costs for the choral program.

 

SPORTS

Central football advances to tournament

The Central Washington University football team qualified for the NCAA Division II Football Championship Playoffs. Central travels to play Western Colorado, in Gunnison, Colorado at 3 p.m., Saturday in a first-round game.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is chicken and dumplings and applesauce. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 43 degrees. Sunset is at 4:20 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 37 degrees. Winds will be 10 to 20 mph. There’s a 50percent chance of rain during the day, and 100 percent overnight with up to half an inch of rainfall.
