Welcome back

Central Washington University students begin moving into residence halls today. Activities for new and returning students are slated throughout the weekend on campus. The annual Bite of the Burg in downtown Ellensburg is on Sept. 19 and classes start on Sept. 20.


County commissioners host town hall meeting

The Kittitas County commissioners are hosting a town hall meeting at 5:30 today in the Upper Kittitas County Courthouse in Cle Elum. The commissioners will make a presentation on topics including funding allocations, roads and economic, development followed by a questions and answers session.


Restaurant opening

Ellensburg’s newest restaurant, Smokey’s Barbecue, is scheduled to open on Thursday with a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. Smokey’s, which long had a location in the South Cle Elum Train Deport, is opening in the former Dakota Café location on Pearl Street.


Having a blast at the pass

Rock blasting is scheduled for 6:30 tonight on Interstate 90. Traffic will be stopped eastbound at milepost 63 and westbound at milepost 70. The road closure is expected to last an hour.


Cornhole for CASA

The annual CASA Rocks Cornhole tournament is 11 a.m., Saturday at Unity Park. The cost is $50 per team and the event is a fundraiser for Court Advocates for Children. More information is available on the Court Advocates for Children Kittitas County website.


Threshing Bee is this weekend

The annual Threshing Bee and Antique Equipment Show is on Saturday and Sunday at the Kittitas Valley Event Center. The show includes a tractor parade each day at 1 p.m., a threshing bee demonstration at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday, as well as tractor-drawn rides and an array of family activities. Each day starts with breakfast by the Rodeo City Kiwanis at 7 a.m. Admission is a $2 donation. The show is organized by the Kittitas Valley Early Iron Club.


SPORTS

Central volleyball makes home debut

Local fans get their first chance to see the Central Washington University volleyball team in action when rival Western Washington University visits for a 7 p.m. match, today in the Student Union and Recreation Center.

EHS soccer, volleyball lose

The Ellensburg High School soccer and volleyball teams both lost in games played Tuesday. The soccer team fell to East Valley, 3-2. EHS took the early lead on a Layne Rogel goal and then tied the match midway through the second half with an Avery Leist goal. The Red Devils scored the game-winner in the 78th minute. The Bulldogs are next in action Saturday at Prosser. The EHS volleyball team lost 3-1 to West Valley. The Rams won the first two sets before the Bulldogs took the third. West Valley closed out the fourth set, 25-21. Alana Marrs led EHS with 17 kills. Hazel Murphy added 10 kills. EHS hosts Chelan at 7 tonight.

In other high school sports action, Tuesday, the Cle Elum-Roslyn soccer team routed Columbian, 11-1. The Warriors travel to play Granger today at 6. Cle Elum’s volleyball team lost 3-0 to Goldendale. County-rival Kittitas visits Cle Elum for a 6:30 match tonight. The Coyotes come into the match with a 2-0 record, having defeated Highland, 3-0, Tuesday.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table lunch is rosemary pork loin, sweet potatoes/squash, mushroom sherry sauce, mixed vegetables, fruit cocktail and a dinner roll. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
