City shifts economic development effort
The Ellensburg City Council moved toward merging its economic development efforts with the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce at its Monday meeting. The council took steps to dissolve the Ellensburg Business Development Authority, which has been doing business as Centerfuse. Ellensburg has been working with the chamber, Kittitas County and Central Washington University to devise a more efficient, coordinated approach to economic development. The council will consider the final reading of the resolution to dissolve the EBDA at its next meeting.
Burn ban to be lifted
The burn ban on recreational fires in Kittitas County will be lifted on Friday. The lifting of the ban applies to county land, the town of South Cle Elum and the cities of Cle Elum and Roslyn.
CWU school year gets underway
First-year Central Washington University students begin moving in on campus today with the help of CWU Movers and Shakers. New student orientation continues on Friday through Tuesday with the Bite of the Burg in downtown Ellensburg set for Tuesday afternoon. Returning and transfer students start arriving on campus on Sunday.
Migration expert speaks at Audubon meeting
Award-winning science writer Rebecca Heisman will discuss bird migration at the Kittitas County Audubon meeting at 7 p.m., today, in Hal Holmes Community Center. Heisman is the author of “Flight Paths: How a Passionate and Quirky Group of Pioneering Scientists Solved the Mystery of Bird Migration.” The presentation is open to the public and also is available via Zoom.
Vagina Monologues has two more performance
Kittitas County Pride’s production of “The Vagina Monologues” features performances on at 7 p.m. Saturday and Oct. 5 at the United Methodist Church. A question and answer session follows the Oct. 5 show. Ticket information is on the Kittitas County Pride website.
Museum highlights I-90 interstate wildlife crossings
The work of CWU staff and students will be highlighted in the CWU Museum of Culture and Environment exhibit, “Where the Forest Meets the Road,” opening on Oct. 3. Faculty and students in the CWU Department of Biological Sciences have partnered with the state Department of Transportation, the U.S. Forest Service, and non-governmental organizations to monitor animals who live along the I-90 East Snoqualmie Pass corridor. The exhibit focuses on the importance of wildlife crossings on I-90.
Dru Bru celebrates Oktoberfest
Dru Bru’s fourth annual Oktoberfest celebration is from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, at the Cle Elum taproom. There will be German-style beers, German-themed food, a keg toss and mini golf.
Iron Horse Dirtbag Carnival
Iron Horse Brewery’s annual Dirtbag Carnaval starts at 4 p.m. Saturday. The carnival features food trucks, rigged games, a hot dog eating contest, live T-shirt printing from Punch Gallery and a Trucker Hat Bar from Blonde Dog. The Sleepers and Cockaphonix will perform starting at 7 p.m.. Tickets are $10.

High football set for this weekend
Kittitas County high school football teams compete on Friday and Saturday this weekend. Ellensburg welcomes Ephrata for a 7 p.m., kickoff Friday at Andreotti Field. Cle Elum-Roslyn plays Friday Harbor at 5 p.m., Friday, at Granite Falls High School. Kittitas hosts Forks at 2 p.m., Saturday at Harding Field. Easton plays Wishkah at 1 p.m., Saturday, at Cle Elum-Roslyn High School.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is beef stew, garlic toast and applesauce. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
