NEWS

City Hall closed through Thursday

Air quality concerns associated with construction have resulted in the closure of City Hall through Thursday, according to a news release from the city of Ellensburg. Roof replacement work created debris in parts of the building. In air testing, one of the 14 samples was above the threshold for asbestos-containing material. An asbestos abatement contractor was brought on Monday.

Utility billing payments and customer services will be available online, by phone and in person at Hal Holmes Community Center between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. A temporary permit/planning counter also is set up at Hal Holmes. Scheduled public meetings will occur online only.


Final day to return ballots

Today is the final day to return primary election ballots. There are two races on the primary ballot, both in the Upper County. Voters are being asked to narrow the field from three to two in the Cle Elum-Roslyn School Board Position 2 race and in the race for Cle Elum Mayor. There are drop-box locations at the Upper County District Court, Roslyn City Hall, South Cle Elum Town Hall and the Ronald Fire Station.


Police celebrate National Night Out

National Night Out celebrations will be held in Ellensburg, Cle Elum and Kittitas on today. The Ellensburg Police Department welcomes community members to the Eat with the Heat BBQ from 6 to 8 p.m. at Veterans’ Memorial Park. The food is free and there will be representatives from many other law and first-responder agencies and organizations.

The Cle Elum-Roslyn Police Department will be offering up hot dogs and hamburgers from 3 to 6 p.m. at Cle Elum City Park. Other first-responder agencies also will be on hand. This event is free and open to all.

The Kittitas Police Department and Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue will offer a barbecue, live music by Abbigale and outdoor summer activities from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kittitas Gazebo.


SPORTS

CWU football is expected to do well

The Central Washington University football team was picked to finish second in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll released Thursday, behind Angelo State. The Wildcats finished second in the league last year. CWU running back Tre’jon Henderson was selected as the conference’s preseason offensive player of the year. Central opens the season at Weber State on Aug. 31.


Chance to skate, make friends

Rodeo City Roller Derby invites skaters to join them for a summer social skate at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the Mountain View Park Skate Rink. Social skates will be held on Aug. 8 and 15, as well.


EVENTS

Shelter celebrates anniversary

The Ellensburg Animal Shelter celebrates its one-year anniversary of joining with the Yakima Humane Society from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at the shelter. There will be an adoption event, a bounce house, a food truck, games and prizes.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table lunch is vegetarian chili, cornbread and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 91 degrees. Sunset is at 8:35 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 59 degrees. Winds will be from the northwest at 15 to 25 mph. The moon will be full.
