Smoke lingers in the county
While wildfire smoke lingered in Kittitas County on Monday, pushing air quality levels to very unhealthy levels, the state Department of Ecology’s smoke forecast shows the air quality level improving to moderate through most of the county today and into good levels by Wednesday and through the rest of the week. The DOE has the county under an air quality alert until noon, Wednesday. The smoke continues to come from fires in the north of the state and Canada.
Work ongoing on Ruby
Drivers should expect road closures on portions of Ruby Street between East Manitoba and East Fifth Avenue during the day and overnight this week as crews place skim patch on the roadway.
County fair names ambassadors
Bode Sherley and Kaden Mattson were named the 2023 Kittitas County Fair Ambassadors. Among the duties of the ambassadors is to promote the fair with public appearances, publicity, endorsements and photographs. This year’s fair opens on Aug. 31.
Applications accepted for free preschool
The Ellensburg School District is taking applications for its free preschool program. The child must be age 3 to 4 by Aug. 31. The list of eligibility requirements families must meet are available on the Ellensburg School District’s Facebook page.
EVENTS
Rodeo speaker series concludes
The concluding event of the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame’s Rodeo Night at the Museum speaker series celebrating 100 years of the Ellensburg Rodeo is at 7:23 p.m., Wednesday at the Hall of Fame. The final in the series is Famous Moments and Photos: Capturing the Action. The event is free of charge.
Big Band closes concert series
The Ellensburg Big Band brings the Music in the Park summer concert series to a close with a performance at 6:30 p.m., Thursday at Alder Street Park. The Ellensburg Big Band is an 18-member classic Swing Jazz Band in the tradition of the dance bands of the 1940s and 50s.
Getting ready to go back to school
Morgan Middle School is holding Camp Morgan this week for incoming middle school students. Ellensburg High School’s Ninth Grade orientation event is Aug. 29. It starts with a family barbecue at 11:30 p.m., which is followed by a student program and parent orientation.
Teen event set for Friday
The 509 Teens Back to School Bash is at 6 p.m., Friday at West Ellensburg Park. The event is for 13 to 17-year-olds and will feature games, music, food and raffle prizes. The Kittitas County Recovery Community Organization sponsors the bash.
SPORTS
Mini-volleyball signup underway
Registration for the youth Mini-Volleyball program opened on Monday. Mini-volleyball is a clinic-based program for boys and girls, grades first to third, offered through the Ellensburg Parks and Recreation Department. Registration continues to Sept. 8, or until the sessions are full. The clinics run from Sept. 25 through Oct. 19. Information is available on the Parks and Recreation page on the city’s website.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table lunch is beef and sausage meatloaf, mashed potatoes, rosemary garlic gravy, green beans and a roll. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
