NEWS

Hoedown set for Wednesday

The annual Hoedown in the Downtown is from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday in Unity Park. The Hoedown features musical performances by Abbigale and the Dusty 45s, a beer garden, kids corral activities and a chance to meet the 2003 Ellensburg Rodeo Royal Court. The Ellensburg Downtown Association organizes the event.

Band on the march

The Ellensburg High School will march in the Craig’s Hill area on tonight, Briarwood on Wednesday, the Mountain View Park neighborhoods on Thursday and Capitol Avenue/EHS neighborhoods on Friday in preparation for Saturday’s Ellensburg Rodeo Parade. The band heads out at about 5:30 each evening.


WestStar Roping event Wednesday.

The annual WestStar Best of the Best Team Roping competition takes place Wednesday at the Ellensburg Rodeo Arena. The pro-am starts at 10 a.m., with open roping at 1 p.m.

Big day at Morgan

Morgan Middle School students can pick up their class schedules and check out Chromebooks from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., today at the middle school.

Freshmen orientation at EHS

Ellensburg High School’s freshmen orientation is today. The schedule includes a family barbecue at 11:30 a.m., parent orientation from noon to 12:30 p.m., and a student program from noon to 3 p.m.


Sneak peek for students

Cle Elum-Roslyn students and families get a chance to check out the schools before the start of the year on Wednesday. Freshmen orientation at Cle Elum-Roslyn High School is 3 to 4 p.m. Walter Strom Middle School’s Family Engagement Night from 5 to 7 p.m. This is a chance for students to get a hard copy of their class schedule. Cle Elum-Roslyn Elementary School is holding a Curriculum/Back to School night from 5 to 7 p.m.


Beware of blasting

Interstate 90 will be closed eastbound at Milepost 63 and western at Exit 70 near Easton at 7 tonight for rock blasting. The closure is expected to last an hour.


Thursday is the start of Labor Day weekend

The Kittitas County Fair opens at 10 a.m., Thursday. This is Super 1 Day with $5 admission tickets for sale at Super 1. The Ellensburg Rodeo opens with slack competition at 7 a.m., Thursday.


Bloom Pavilion expansion celebrated

The ribbon cutting for the Bloom Pavilion expansion will be at 1 p.m., Thursday on the fairgrounds.


Dogs in need of foster care

The Yakima Humane Society’s Ellensburg Animal Shelter seeks people willing to provide foster care to dogs. The shelter covers all expenses, whether medical care or food. The Ellensburg shelter currently has 25 dogs and only 16 kennels. More information is available on the shelter’s website.


SPORTS

The college sports season gets underway Thursday with three Central Washington University teams in action. The football team travels to Weber State for a 5 p.m. kickoff. The volleyball team faces Metro State at 2:30 p.m. in San Bernardino, California, and the women’s soccer team faces Cal Poly Humboldt at 3:30 p.m. in Seattle.

EVENTS

International Overdose Awareness Day is Thursday

An International Overdose Awareness Day event is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday at Mountain View Park. The event is to raise awareness and commemorate those who have been lost to overdose.

LUNCH

The FISH Open Table lunch is baked potato with chili, sour cream, chives, cheese and steamed broccoli, and garlic toast and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 72 degrees. Sunset is at 7:47 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 57 degrees. There will be rain showers in the morning, diminishing in the afternoon. Winds will be from 25 to 35.
