Check out new businesses

Two new businesses celebrate their grand openings this week. Reruns Consignment at 107 E. Third Ave. holds its grand opening this afternoon at 5:30. Elk Heights Distillery at 1911 W. Dolarway Road stages its grand opening at 12:28 p.m., Saturday.


Distinguished Young Woman winner from Ellensburg

Sydney Ohlemann of Ellensburg was the winner of the Distinguished Young Women of Washington competition held this past weekend at Washington State University. Ohlemann won more than $5,000 in scholarships and advanced to the national competition in Alabama.


Storms bring lightning

According to the U.S. Forest Service, the storms across the region on Sunday and Monday resulted in 1,352 lightning strikes in the state. It is not yet known whether the associated rainfall prohibited fire starts.


Fall sports near

The calendar may say summer, but for high school athletes the fall sports season nears. Ellensburg High School hosts its fall sports parent meeting at 7 p.m., Monday, in the high school commons. Football practice starts on Aug. 16 and the remainder of the sport practices start on Aug. 21. Information on middle school sports, as well as Camp Morgan, is available on the Morgan Middle School website.


Cle Elum-Roslyn seeks school board member

The Cle Elum-Roslyn School Board is looking for applicants interested in filling the open Position 2 seat on the board. Information on the district boundaries and application is available on the district’s website. Applications will be reviewed on Aug. 28.


Thorp welcomes new coaches

Maia Valencia and Sarah Hood join the Thorp High School volleyball coaching staff this fall and Amber Carlson is the new cross country coach. Thorp’s fall sports parents meeting is 7 p.m., Monday.



EVENTS

Join in the skate

The Rodeo City Roller Derby invites anyone to join them in a summer social skate, 6:30 p.m., today at Mountain View Park.


Run with the pack

The Ellensburg Running Group holds a weekly run, starting at 5:30 p.m., today, at the Rotary Park playground. The group typically runs about 5K.

Have coffee with the council

The Coffee with the City Council event is from 8 to 10 a.m., Thursday at Early Bird. A couple of council members will be available for coffee and conversation.


Calling all cowgirls

The Ellensburg Rodeo is sponsoring Cowgirls Night Out, 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday in downtown Ellensburg. Participating venues may offer music, refreshment and discounts.


Celebrating rodeo with wine

The Ellensburg Rodeo Wine of Fame wine release party is from 5 to 9 p.m., Thursday, at Gard Vintners. It will be an opportunity to taste a limited edition artist series wine from Gard Vintners.


Get a free snow cone

The city of Ellensburg celebrates 811 Day with free snow cones from 2 to 4 p.m., Friday at City Hall. Homeowners and excavators must call 811 before any digging project.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table lunch is chicken parmesan, peas and an apple. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 88 degrees with a sunshine and cloud mix. Sunset is at 8:24 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 63 degrees. Winds will be from the northwest at 10 to 25 mph.
