NEWS

Primary ballots to be mailed

The ballots for the Aug. 6 primary election will be mailed on Wednesday. The ballots must be returned by 8 p.m., Aug. 6. In country contests, the primary will narrow the field from three to two candidates in the race for Superior Court Judge Department 1. The race for U.S. 8th District representative will be narrowed as will multiple races for statewide offices.


First Concert in the Park is Thursday

Ellensburg Summer Concerts in the Park series starts with the Rod Giles Band from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, at North Alder Street Park. The concert series continues on Thursdays through Aug. 22.


County holds hearing to set price for First and Last Chance Tavern property

The Kittitas County commissioners will hold a public hearing in the commissioners’ auditorium at 2 p.m., today to set a minimum price for property located at 1200 E. University Way, the address of the First and Last Chance Tavern. The county purchased the tavern property in 2016 as part of the Kittitas Valley Event Center expansion project.


Candidate forums scheduled

Primary candidate forums will be held in Ellensburg today and Cle Elum on Wednesday. The Ellensburg forum will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hal Holmes Community Center and the Cle Elum forum is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Centennial Center. The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce and League of Women Voters of Kittitas County sponsor the events.


Book Mobile hits the road

The Ellensburg Bookmobile makes the rounds each Tuesday evening in July. Starting at 5 p.m., the bookmobile stops at Millpond, Crestview Apartments on Alder Street, Rainier Street and the Hillside Mobile Park on Cascade Way. Kids in grades K to 8 can check out up to three books.


Safeway's grand reopening is Wednesday

The grand reopening for the Ellensburg Safeway is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday. There will be random check-stand giveaways throughout the day.


Author to speak on Woody Guthrie

Joel Underwood, author of “That Ribbon of Highway: Woody Guthrie in the Pacific Northwest” will speak at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday at Hal Holmes Community Center as part of the Ellensburg Public Library and Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau series. The presentation is free and open to the public.


Night Market is Wednesday

The Ellensburg Downtown Association Night Market is from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday on Pine Street, between Third and Fourth avenues. The night market features music, food and an array of vendors.


Energy code meeting on Wednesday

The City of Ellensburg’s Building Division is holding an information session about new Washington State Energy Code updates from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, in the Council Chambers. The presentation includes a Q&A session. The Washington State Energy Code was amended in 2021, and changes went into effect on March 15. The presentation covers changes in the new code, related to residential and commercial building projects.


City’s Poet Laureate position is open

The city of Ellensburg is taking applications for its Poet Laureate position. This two-year role replaces Marie Marchand, who served as the city’s first Poet Laureate. The deadline for application proposal submissions is September 15, 2024. The term begins on Jan. 1, 2025. Application packets are available on the city’s website or can be picked up at City Hall in the Administration Office.


CWU grad earns Emmy

Central Washington University film studies graduate Gracen Bayer received a regional Emmy Award at the Student Production Awards ceremony in Seattle for her work on a promotional video for CWU’s Pulse Magazine. Bayer won the Photographer Award in the College Craft category.

 

LUNCH                                                        

The FISH Open Table Lunch is baked potato with vegetarian chili, a dinner roll and peaches. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
