Ballots in the mail today

Ballots for the Nov. 5 General Election will be mailed to voters today. The ballot features multiple federal and state offices, state initiatives and county offices. Ballots must be returned by 8 p.m., Nov. 5. Voters received a stamped envelope with their ballots and there are multiple drop boxes across the county.


Alley closure Tuesday through Thursday

The alley between Lincoln /Elliot streets and Second/Third avenues will be closed today through Thursday to tap the main sewer line for future homes on North Elliot Street.


Candidate forums set for this week

A candidate forum will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., today at Hal Holmes Community Center. The event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Kittitas County and the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce.


Jazz recital Tuesday

CWU Director of Jazz Keith Karns will perform a faculty recital at 7 p.m., today, in the McIntyre Music Building Concert Hall. Karns will play music by Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, Melba Liston and Miles Davis, and be joined by Seattle-area musicians Greg Williamson, Kelsey Mines, John Hanson, and Steve Treseler.


Faculty recital Wednesday

The Shea-Kim duo performs a faculty recital at 6 p.m., Wednesday, in the McIntyre Music Building Recital Hall. The duo consists of CWU professors Brendan Shea on violin and Yerin Kim on piano.


Chamber membership meeting Wednesday

The inaugural annual Member Meeting of the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Sue Lombard Dining Hall. This meeting is designed exclusively for business members, focusing on initiatives that benefit members and contribute to the economic growth of Kittitas County.

 

Neuro-friendly Storytime at library

The Ellensburg Public Library hosts a Neuro-Friendly Storytime at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. All ages and abilities are welcome. There will be another offering on Nov. 21.


Poetry reading on Thursday

The Habitats Poetry Reading and Generative Writing Workshop features Katherine Whitcomb at 6:30 p.m., Thursday at the Ellensburg Public Library. Whitcomb is a CWU professor and the author of three full-length poetry collections.


CWU Trustees meet this week

The CWU Trustees meet Thursday and Friday in Ellensburg. The regular business meeting is at 2:10 p.m., Thursday, in the Wellington Event Center on campus. The meeting continues at 8:30 a.m., Friday, in the event center. Friday’s agenda includes a presentation by the APOYO food bank.


U.S. Marine Band to play at Central Oct. 29

The United States Marine Band, “The President’s Own,” performs in Nicholson Pavilion at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 29. The concert will feature a wide variety of musical selections, from the marches of John Philip Sousa to orchestral transcriptions and contemporary compositions. Free tickets are required for entry and are available online.

 

SPORTS

CWU volleyball player earns honors

CWU volleyball player Marianna Payne was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for helping the Wildcats sweep the Alaska teams in play this past weekend. Central hosts Simon Fraser at 7 p.m., Thursday.

 

High school cross-country teams ranked in state

The Ellensburg High School boys and girls cross country teams are ranked in the 2A Top 10 this week. The boys are ranked third and the girls fourth. The Cle Elum-Roslyn boys are ranked No. 4 in this week's 1B/2B poll. Ellensburg hosts a league cross-country meet at 4:30 p.m., Thursday at Rotary Park.

In other high school sports this week, Ellensburg’s volleyball team travels to play East Valley at 6 p.m., today, and hosts Wenatchee at 6 p.m., Thursday. The Bulldogs soccer team travels to play Othello at 6 p.m., today. The EHS swim team hosts at league meet at the CWU pool at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday. The Kittitas and Cle Elum-Roslyn volleyball teams play at 6:30 p.m., Thursday at Kittitas.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is spaghetti and meatballs, green beans and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
