Search and Rescue is a finalist for the Defender Service Award

Kittitas County Search and Rescue is among five 2024 Land Rover Defender Service Award finalists. The award recipient receives a customized Land Rover and $24,000 to support their mission. People can vote on the award at the Land Rover Defender award website once a day through Oct. 17. KCSR was nominated by Motion State Productions, a video production company owned by Amber and Corey Koniniec of Cle Elum. Motion State submitted a three-minute video about KCSR's people and operations, posted for viewing on the Land Rover Defender award website.


Fire burns in Currier Creek Canyon

A brush fire in Currier Creek Canyon led to residents on upper West Sun East Road receiving Level 2 — get ready to leave — evacuation notices Saturday night. The notice was reduced to Level 1 on Sunday morning. The fire was at 160 acres and 60 percent containment as of Monday afternoon.


Piano performance at CWU Tuesday

Pianist Sara Davis Buechner performs at 7 p.m., today in the McIntyre Music Building Concert Hall. Buechner has performed in every state and province of North America — as a recitalist, chamber musician and soloist with top orchestras such as New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony and Philadelphia Orchestra; and in venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and the Hollywood Bowl.


Cle Elum accepting Pangrazi nominees

Cle Elum is accepting nominations for the 2024 Judge Paul Pangrazi Memorial Service award. The awards honors people who have accumulated a record of distinguished service that benefits Cle Elum citizens. Nominations are accepted until Oct. 24. More information is on the city’s Facebook page.


Chamber After-Hours is at Jensen Farms

The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce After-Hours is at the Patch at Jensen Farms from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday. The event is free and open to the public.


Elections explained on Wednesday

An informational meeting on elections will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Hal Holmes Community Center. The event is presented by the League of Women Voters of Kittitas County and the Ellensburg Public Library in partnership with the Kittitas County Auditor’s Office. Kittitas County Auditor, Bryan Elliott, will answer questions about voting procedures, ballot processing and election security.


Concert at Central on Friday

A New Music Festival Composition Concert will be at the McIntyre Music Building Recital Hall at 7 p.m., Friday. This event is free and open to the public.


SPORTS

Cross country teams are among the best in state

The Ellensburg High School boys’ cross country team ranked No. 3, and the Bulldog girls No. 4 in this week’s state 2A poll. The Cle Elum-Roslyn High School boys’ cross country team is No. 4 in the 1B/2B poll.

In high school athletics this week, the Ellensburg soccer team hosts Toppenish at 4 p.m., today. The EHS volleyball team hosts Grandview at 6 p.m., today, and travels to play Ephrata at 6 p.m., Thursday. The Cle Elum-Roslyn soccer team travels to play Mabton at 6 p.m., today, and travels to play Warden at 6 p.m., Wednesday. The Warriors volleyball team plays at White Swan at 6 p.m., today, and hosts La Salle at 6:30 p.m., Thursday. The Cle Elum cross country team is at a meet at Tri Cities Prep at 4 p.m., Thursday. The Kittitas volleyball team plays at Highland at 6:30 p.m., today, and hosts Goldendale at 6:30 p.m., Thursday.

 

LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is bacon mac and cheese, peas and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
