Cops take to the rooftop

The annual Cop on Top Special Olympics fundraiser is from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday. Local law enforcement leaders will be “stranded” on the roof of Fred Meyer to raise donations for local Special Olympics athletes. There will be a hot dog barbecue with proceeds going to Special Olympics, a raffle and back-to-school backpacks will be lowered to the first 150 kids who attend.


Kittitas interviews finalists for the superintendent position

Two finalists for the Kittitas School District superintendent position are interviewing in the district this week. The finalists are Kevin Jacka of Deer Park and Timothy LaGrange of Huntingburg, Indiana. Jacka is the executive director of The Rural Alliance. The Rural Alliance is a rural education leadership collaborative. LaGrange is the superintendent of the Southwest Dubois County School Corporation in Huntingburg. Michelle Wadeikis has been serving as interim superintendent of the district following Angela Von Essen’s departure earlier this summer.


FISH in need of donations

FISH Food Bank officials say donations are needed to fill the community shelves at the food bank. FISH’s summer meal program for kids in the parks ends on Friday and the concern is families needing food for children during the gap before the start of the school year. A list of needed food items is on FISH’s Facebook page. Donations can be made at 804 Elmview Road or at the Open Table location on Main Street.


EVENTS

Roslyn gathers to sing Wednesday

The Come Together Singing Community Gathering, hosted by Paul Vasile, is set for 7 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday at the Roslyn Creative Center. The event, sponsored by the Roslyn Downtown Association, is a time of community singing and reflection on how songs shape identity and culture.


Rodeo speaker series concludes

The concluding event of the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame’s Rodeo Night at the Museum speaker series celebrating 100 years of the Ellensburg Rodeo is at 7:23 p.m., Wednesday at the Hall of Fame. The final in the series is Famous Moments and Photos: Capturing the Action. The event is free of charge.


Back-to-school night Thursday

The Kittitas Secondary School Student/Parent Back to School Night is from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday at the secondary school. It is a chance for students to get their schedule, enjoy dinner and receive a free T-shirt designed for the Class of 2027.


Big Band closes concert series

The Ellensburg Big Band brings the Music in the Park summer concert series to a close with a performance at 6:30 p.m., Thursday at Alder Street Park. The Ellensburg Big Band is an 18-member classic Swing Jazz Band in the tradition of the dance bands of the 1940s and 50s.


Teen event set for Friday

The 509 Teens Back to School Bash is at 6 p.m., Friday at West Ellensburg Park. The event is for 13 to 17-year-olds will feature games, music, food and raffle prizes. The Kittitas County Recovery Community Organization sponsors the bash.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table lunch jerk chicken, Jamaican beans and rice, mango salsa, mixed vegetables and fruit salad. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
