NEWS

Kittitas schools hire new superintendent

The Kittitas School District has hired Timothy LaGrange to serve as district superintendent. LaGrange most recently was the superintendent of the Southwest Dubois County School Corporation in Huntingburg, Indiana. The previous superintendent Angela Von Essen resigned in early July.


City pool closed this week

The Kittitas Valley Memorial Pool is closed through Sept. 10 for annual maintenance.


Hoedown set for tonight

The annual Hoedown in the Downtown is from 6 to 10 tonight in Unity Park. The Hoedown features musical performances by Abbigale and the Dusty 45s, a beer garden, kids corral activities and a chance to meet the 2003 Ellensburg Rodeo Royal Court. The Ellensburg Downtown Association organizes the event.

Band on the march

The Ellensburg High School will march in Briarwood tonight, the Mountain View Park neighborhoods on Thursday and Capitol Avenue/EHS neighborhoods on Friday in preparation for Saturday’s Ellensburg Rodeo Parade. The band heads out at about 5:30 each evening.


WestStar Roping event Wednesday.

The annual WestStar Best of the Best Team Roping competition takes place today at the Ellensburg Rodeo Arena. The pro-am starts at 10 a.m., with open roping at 1 p.m.

Sneak peek for students

Cle Elum-Roslyn students and families get a chance to check out the schools before the start of the year today. Freshmen orientation at Cle Elum-Roslyn High School is 3 to 4 p.m. Walter Strom Middle School’s Family Engagement Night from 5 to 7 p.m. This is a chance for students to get a hard copy of their class schedule. Cle Elum-Roslyn Elementary School is holding a Curriculum/Back to School night from 5 to 7 p.m.


Thursday is the start of Labor Day weekend

The Kittitas County Fair opens at 10 a.m., Thursday. This is Super 1 Day with $5 admission tickets for sale at Super 1. The Ellensburg Rodeo opens with slack competition at 7 a.m., Thursday.


Bloom Pavilion expansion celebrated

The ribbon cutting for the Bloom Pavilion expansion will be at 1 p.m., Thursday on the fairgrounds.


Market sale Friday

The Kittitas County Fair Market sale starts at 11 a.m., Friday in Bloom Pavilion. Market sale proceeds go to 4-H members who raise the animals. Last year the community raised $670,000 at the sale. Buyers can bid in person or online.


SPORTS

CWU sports kickoff

The college sports season starts Thursday with three Central Washington University teams in action. The football team travels to Weber State for a 5 p.m. kickoff. The volleyball team faces Metro State at 2:30 p.m. in San Bernardino, California, and the women’s soccer team faces Cal Poly Humboldt at 3:30 p.m. in Seattle.


Turn on the Friday Night Lights

High school football season gets underway Friday with Ellensburg traveling to Zillah, and Cle Elum-Roslyn heading to Manson. Kickoff for both games is 7 p.m. The Kittitas game at Lake Roosevelt scheduled for Friday was canceled.

EVENTS

International Overdose Awareness Day is Thursday

An International Overdose Awareness Day event is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday at Mountain View Park. The event is to raise awareness and commemorate those who have been lost to overdose.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table lunch is grilled sesame chicken salad, won tons and Mandarin oranges. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 74 degrees. Sunset is at 7:45 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 56 degrees. There is a slight chance of a rain shower during the day. Winds will be from 25 to 35.
