City considers extending bill payment period

Ellensburg ratepayers may soon be granted a longer time to pay utility bills. At Monday’s meeting, the City Council approved the first reading of a resolution to extend the utility billing period from 15 to 22 days. The billing period starts the day the bills are mailed. City manager Heidi Behrends Cerniwey said mail is taking longer to reach households and in some situations, people have received their bill the day it is due. The period for final turnoff notice would increase from seven to 14 days. The council will consider a second reading and approval of the resolution at its next meeting.
