NEWS

City Hall closed through Thursday

Air quality concerns associated with construction have resulted in the closure of City Hall through Thursday, according to a news release from the city of Ellensburg. Utility billing payments and customer services will be available online, by phone and in person at Hal Holmes Community Center between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. A temporary permit/planning counter also is set up at Hal Holmes.


‘Nick on the Rocks’ star honored

Central Washington University professor and “Nick on the Rocks” host Nick Zentner will receive the Geological Society of America’s Public Service Award later this year, according to a CWU. In announcing the award, GSA officials said, “Nick Zentner loves to teach about geology, but he has expanded his outreach to the general public and is a star! He has worked extensively to make information interesting and accessible to a wide range of people, using the Pacific Northwest as a lens.”


EVENTS

Music on tap at Alder Park

The Eric Ode Children’s Group performs at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, at Alder Street Park, as part of the Music in the Park Summer Series. Ode is a national award-winning children’s singer/songwriter, author, poet and former school teacher. The Summer Park Series act on Aug. 10 is the Killdeer String Band.


Work on creek

Volunteers can join in restoration work on Sorenson Creek from 3 to 6 p.m., Thursday, as part of the Mid-Columbia Fisheries Summer of Stewardship project. Volunteers will gather at 2930 Riverbottom Road. Work will include weeding and watering to protect recently installed plants. Tools, gloves, refreshments and snacks will be provided. Register on the Mid-Columbia Fisheries’ website.


Shelter celebrates anniversary

The Ellensburg Animal Shelter celebrates its one-year anniversary of joining the Yakima Humane Society from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at the shelter. There will be an adoption event, bounce house, a food truck, games and prizes.


Outdoor fun for kids

The Washington Outdoor School offers a free mini-garden camp for kids from 10 a.m. to noon, Friday at 7620 Manastash Road. Information on how to RSVP is available on the Washington Outdoor School Facebook page.


A day for young gladiators

Ellensburg’s annual Youth Gladiator Dash is Saturday at Rotary Park. Check-in is at 9:30 a.m. with action getting underway at 10 a.m. The dash features running, jumping, sliding, crawling, balancing, hoping, searching, climbing, throwing and getting muddy.


Learn about the sounds of the shrub-steppe

Saturday’s Kid’s Corral event at the Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility is “Do You Hear What I Hear? Sounds of the Shrub Steppe.” Kids will learn how to use a decibel meter to measure sounds and then record and draw what they hear. The session starts are 1 p.m. with a guided tour of a wind turbine at 2 p.m. The Kid’s Corral is a free series of events throughout the summer at the wind farm.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table lunch is vegetarian chili, cornbread and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
