A bright Star…
To describe Star Anna’s sounds would depend on the day, the show, the album, or the band. Alt country, folk, blues, soul, and Americana are all fitting, but what remains the central focus of every performance is her voice. Whether she’s sitting on the stage with only her acoustic guitar or backed by some of Seattle’s finest musicians, it’s her voice that defines her music. It is belted with a raw, grittiness that bellows from a deep, dark reserve. It is softly laid down atop gentle strings, aching and tender. It is spit out with a fierce recklessness that echoes the glory days of punk. She’s been compared to Joan Jett, Arlo Guthrie, Fiona Apple, and Joe Cocker but she is unmistakably her own entity. Spare, fragile, and gusty, Star Anna is the real thing.
Star Anna grew up in the country, played drums in a punk band in high school, heard an Elliott Smith record, picked up a guitar and never looked back. Now a Pacific Northwest staple, Star Anna has released six albums, (3 with the band The Laughing Dogs and 3 solo records). She has caught the attention of some of Seattle’s musical legends, such as Guns n Roses bassist Duff McKagan and Pearl Jam guitar player Mike McCready, who invited her to open up the Pearl Jam 20 festival (Alpine Valley, 2011). She also released a limited addition 7″ with McCready of his song, Keep On and her cover of Call Your Girlfriend (both songs available on iTunes) Whether playing with a full band or perched solo on a chair with a tambourine tied to her foot and her dog asleep in the guitar case, her voice stands out as a raw and honest declaration of a hard life lived and earned with moments of sparkling aching hope and always a twinge of darkness.
What is the Tiny Stage Concert Series?
ECR plays host to live music performances on our Tiny Stage in the 420 LOFT Art Gallery. Its a chance for local and regional talent to showcase their music amid beautiful art and a modest size audience! We stream these concerts live, in real-time on ECR “airwaves” and record them for your listening pleasure at any time of the day or night. Don’t miss out, one Thursday a month, at 7:00 pm, live on Ellensburg Community Radio!
