We welcome to the August Tiny Stage: Mel Peterson with Becky Griswold
Thursday, August 19th @ 7:00 pm 420 N. Pearl Street or listen on eburgradio.org
Who is Mel Peterson?
Melany Peterson, a beautiful, humble, southern spirit in song and mind, says, “Singing is what I do and just let me do my ‘thang’.” Vocalist Melany Peterson grew up listening to Roberta Flack, Dionne Warwick, Jerry Butler, Isaac Hayes, and Aretha Franklin. At the age of 12, Melany’s fledgling interest in singing took flight inside her hometown church in Charleston, SC where she would often be caught alone playing the piano and singing her favorite tunes. Melany’s singing took off, professionally, in 1982 with the Charleston Actors Theatre Society. First sharing her gift of song at the Garden Theatre in Charleston, SC., she then made a name for herself singing with the band Sea Breeze and by joining a gospel group, “Voices of Deliverance” which performed traditional spirituals and psalms.
Today, this “Song Bird of the South” is the key vocalist of the Mel Peterson Collective, Blush and the Mel Peterson Gospel group which performs a fusion of Contemporary-pop, Jazz standards, Gospel, and R & B classics. You can catch her performing at Swiftwater Cellars both in Bellevue and Cle Elum. Also, various wineries all over the Kittitas and Yakima Valleys, including Benton County. If you’re lucky, she may be playing a private party you’re attending. Making Ellensburg her new home for the past 10 years, Mel has gathered Ellensburg musical talent to strike the heart of those who love music.
Who is Becky Griswold?
Becky Griswold is a pianist/keyboardist/vocalist who originally grew up in lower valley Yakima. She began playing the piano by ear at the age of 3 & thanks to Becky’s attentive piano teacher & school band teachers, she became interested in Jazz & Pop. By age 16, she was recruited by the Yakima Valley Community College jazz performance department. At age 18, Becky toured all over England with YVCC Jazz Combo 1, where they had the number one hit at London’s famous Jazz Café for the month of March in 2001 with their rendition of “Cherokee”. She went on to study Jazz Performance & Composition at CWU. Becky moved to Seattle from 2003-2014 & became an active musician in both the Jazz, R&B, & Top 40’s Cover Band scenes, and for 10 of those years taught a full studio of piano/voice students. Currently, Becky lives in Ellensburg, WA & keeps her calendar busy with a variety of local groups (The Ellensburg Big Band and The Three Amigos Trio) as well as Seattle gigs (Top 40’s cover bands & an original Funk group called, Thaddillac) all while raising a family, teaching piano/voice full time, & contributing to other artist’s recordings, as well as writing & recording her own compositions.
